She continued to go out with me. It was the beginning of my understanding that women often just let guys talk and don't really hold them all that responsible for what they say. A winter storm prevented me from flying to see my girl friend of the time, so I decided to have flowers delivered and to send her a Valentine's day telegram. Two very nice ladies at Western Union offered me a little book of sample telegrams for the occasion--all of them sappy little romatic poems that I wouldn't be caught dead sending. So I composed my own prose message, thanked the ladies for their help, and paid. The next weekend I got there and my girl friend was all smiles about the flowers and telegram. "I didn't know you were so poetic," she said, handing me the telegram she had gotten. My message was on top, but the nice ladies had appended one of the poems free of charge.
