Do you have to be stoned to make the connection? Can you smoke pot or does it take something stronger, like LSD or heroin? Pretty sure it is well known that Lennon tripped more times on acid than almost anyone. He references tripping many times in his songs. I think acid can make you reach a higher state that you can not otherwise reach, and I wouldn't be surprised if it helped their music a lot.
