in german common language every JACK is a BAUER (or BUBE)

lol really? That's probably how they came up with his name then. Now it's just synonymous with badass

is euchre a german game, then?

Euchre appears to have been introduced into the United States by the early German settlers of the State of Pennsylvania,[3] and from that state gradually to have been disseminated throughout the nation. It has been more recently theorized that the game and its name derive from an eighteenth-century Alsatian card game named Juckerspiel,[4] a derivative of Triomphe

It is the game responsible for introducing the Joker card into modern packs; this was invented around 1860 to act as a top trump or best bower (from the German word Bauer, "farmer", denoting also the Jack[1])

I left the room for 10 minutes and when I returned, there was a little window with a countdown on it. I thought it was some sort of evil virus* or something but then I realized it was just Windows wanting to restart my computer without my permission (not clicking "no" for 5 minutes doesn't count as permission). Is this fair? Is there any justification to this, moral or otherwise?

*well some people think Windows is an evil virus.

As much as I have never liked windows based operating systems, I must say that 7 has exceeded all expectations and has yet to draw my ire after 3 months of operation.

No lock-ups, no crashes, no continuous verifications. Just sensible and efficient computing.

Maybe Bill had to retire for them to produce something reasonable? :)

I have noticed lately when my computer is on idle for a bit of time my computer freezes up, and I get an error msg saying my "driver" has stopped. After that my computer screen goes haywire and the font goes crazy.

I have to reboot to make the screen go back to normal.

Well seems that force is the only thing that gets many Windows user to perform security updates.....

For what it's worth, there is a trick to turn it off.

google “NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers” for more information.

When you're a Jet

you're a team on the ground

Someone says third and three

you think, running down

When you're a Jet

you stay low to the ground

only pass when you see

there's no safety around

The Jets are on the move

made another first down

The Jets are on the move

here comes the trap play

Here come the Jets

like a steam rollin' mound

Someone gets in our way

Someone's gettin' run down

Here come the Jets

Let them pass all they want

we'll grind 'em to dust

and we won't have to punt

When the Jets go all the WAY.

Watching Vikings @ Saints right now. Got me wondering...

What is the correct pronunciation of Brett Favre's surname? I've heard the US network commentators call him (sounds like) "FAARV" whereas the English commentator prefers to call him (sounds) "FAAVR"

The original French pronunciation would have been Fah ve r-r-ruh (rolled "R" with the v slurred into the rolled "R")

He certainly must have a "usual" familial pronunciation that is unlikely to be the above.

If you listen to the Fox Sports guy, he almost certainly pronounces the R before the V

thanks hotshot!!

(of course for me Windows is still evil, I mean, what if someone didn't know about this and some very important document got lost?)

I suppose windows is smart enough not to reboot if there is a program that wants to ask you whether you want to save something.

Actually I would not bet on that.

I found that solution after I lost an hour of work, when my computer rebooted while I was on the phone....
