Bidding disaster!

The bidding: 1 - P! - P!! - P

EW have 8 club tricks and a heart ruff. South went down 3, minus 150, minus ten IMPs on a pickup BBO game last night. NS missed a cold slam. Only two of the 16 boards reached the slam.

I sat west. I passed 1 hoping either to pass partner's double or to bid clubs at my second turn. North had only 5 HCP but an automatic 1.

I once held A9xxxxx of hearts and watched LHO bid hearts 3 times on KQJ10x and his partner raised to game on a singleton. That was an easy double for down 2, and I thought I'd never hold more than 7 trumps on defense. This time I held 8 trumps. Wow.

I don't like opening 1 club on a 4432. Other souths opened 1D, 1NT or 2NT.[/hv]

It is nice, but not a must, to have a way to bid very weak hands in response to a nebolous club opening. For example by playing weak jump shifts, then this North hand can bid 2.

Anyway, agree that North has an easy 1 bid if not playing weak jump shifts.

This is a routine 1 response. My normal partnership agreement is to respond on this sort of shape if somewhat weaker than this also.

I have two stupid number of trumps stories, one is where team mates got their system in a twist and played in 2xx with the opening leader holding AKQJxxxx.

Another was the auction 1-P(slow)-1N-X(T/o of )-2-x-p-p-p

I was about to call the man in when partner said "you might want to see dummy first", so I said "Why, have you got 7 of them ?" and he put down AQJxxxxx, +380.

If you are a sound responder over 1x, what I use as a test for answering or not is this:

If I bid 1 and partner rebids 2NT, do I wanna play game?

If the answer is yes, I bid, if the answer is no I pass.

On this deal it is easy to see you wanna play 4 opposite 19 balanced.

I fail to see how it has anything to do with the hand. North has easy 1 response after which you are cruising to the best spot which is 4. The only person to blame here is N, he just made weak bid. Nothing to do which the system played.

Nothing to do with this hand, but swap the 7 and Q and see the difference in final contract between 1 and 1 opening bids.

I hate opening 1 when I am 4234 and hold [hv=s=sakj6hajdaq6c8742]133|100|[/hv]

Why ? if you open 1 (as many people in the UK do) the auction usually goes 1-1N-3N and you've wrongsided it.

It's only bad if partner passes 1 with very short clubs (which is why we respond light with short clubs and only rebid 1N on the 19 count given).

because I play a first and second seat 5 card major system and open this hand 1 and 1 in 3rd and 4th seat :)

As a general guideline for when to respond when partner's opened, howabout this....

if its over a pass by RHO

bid on all 6 counts

Bid on most 5 counts, unless you are very flat, have no aces or tens, you do have some cards in pards suit and no good 4+ major.

With a 4 count, pass unless you have a 5+ card major or some other nice dist. features and your high cards are mostly working (not minor honors in side suits)

---------------

Also nonvul many bid over 1c with few clubs and with zero points.

example, NV with this shape and zero hcp I would still respond 1h after 1c.
