2 balancing decisions

1.

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s632hk2dakj53ct73]133|100|Scoring: IMP

P-1-P-2

P - P - ?[/hv]

2.

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s632hk2dakj53ct73]133|100|Scoring: IMP

P-1-P-2

P - P - ?[/hv]

E-W play 2/1 so 1 is 3+.

2 was inverted , 10+p , and 4+, intended as forcing, though not 100% forcing by PH.

1) V vs NV is the wrong conditions for balancing IMO

2) yes I would try as it looks like RHO had 2/1 3rd seat opener and be ready to apologize when P bids 2

On Problem two: The posters quite properly say "when partner bids 2D" or describe it as inevitable.

They either feel, or have calculated that this hand is more likely to find opener with 4-4-2-3, than normal expectation. Partner could not open, responder has stuff, opener didn't re-up with 3C, and I only have a balanced ten-count. Partner couldn't double on his second round or bid 2D.

I stay out.

1. Pass. 3 at these colors (even when they have a fit, and I have xxx in their suit) seems a bit crazy to me : LHO may have an easy double, and I doubt the conclusion will be a happy one then. 5332 sucks, even after 1M 2M.

2. Double, then 2 over 2.

Some time ago it was insta balance for me hand 1. Now I've changed my mind (after watching tons of vugraphs of wc players). I can bet my ass that the best player in the world (in my very uinformed opinion) would pass that, so I pass too :-)

Not to say that there aren't some who would balance. I am sure there are but the one I am trying to model my play on is passing those 1H - 2H, 1S - 2S auctions very very often.

I would also pass if you move spot to 's.

First hand I overcalled 2D the first round.

Second hand, I don't like the fact they have most the points and couldn't raise. At MP I double, at IMP I pass. And if I believe they are in the midst of a system accident, not just a judgment issue, I def pass.

Going for 500 at IMPs is not the end of the world.

If the opponents are making 110, we would pick up 6 IMPs for getting +110, and lose 9 for -500 (or 8 if they make 140). So if opponents always make 110, if we make 3 50% of the time, go -100 25% of the time, and get doubled for 500 25% of the time, we would come out ahead by balancing. Of course, if you think that we would go for 500 about as often as we would turn -110 into +110 then you would be right to pass.

(I would almost bid 2 but not unfavorable).

Gwnn, I am shocked that you would even almost make such a horrible bid! :)

These same people who will never bid vulnerable at imps on a partial deal will also never double vulnerable at imps on a partial deal (zOMG IT IS IMPS WE CANNOT DOUBLE A PARTIAL EVER WITHOUT GOOD TRUMPS AND 8 TRICKS).

It is so much safer to bid 3D here at imps than at MP vs good opps it is ridiculous. At MP you will get doubled whenever they have like 22+ HCP and balanced hands, and you will go -200 a lot. Here there is basically no downside.

Even red vs. white at imps I'm balancing with 3 on the first hand. The second hand I double and pass an unfortunate 2 advance.

Can't believe people are passing hand 1

that's because it's a forum problem :) In real life we all either overcall 2 or balance 3 :angry:

as to hand 2, dbl + pull 2 to 2. Pard shouldn't have 5 diamonds because he passed 1 with what probably is a hand with short clubs and a few hcps.
