In a strong NT method, pass.

In a weak NT system, especially if partner will bypass a major with a balanced hand, 1. We could be opposite a 4=4=2=3 16 count and 1 will be a horrible result if we play it there. Not to mention that we'd like, on this hand, to get back to the field/par contract. If he doesn't rebid 1N, then we either have lots of hcp or we have some degree of fit....not a good hand for xyz tho...if we want to get back to 2. This approach sucks big time opposite some 4=4=1=4's but we can't cater to everything.

Merry and Happy to all.

"One swallow doesn't make a summer", as the interviewer said, rejecting Monica Lewinsky's application for a job as an accounts clerk.

I certainly would not be happy to hear 3NT from partner and would view the appearance of dummy with some trepidation, so I would have passed.

On another note, if it had gone 1C - (Dble) - ?, I might try redouble, hoping to be able to pass out partner's forcing pass.

Kind of funny, but I used to play with a guy where 1NT in response specifically to a 1 opening showed 2-5 HCP. The more vulnerable, the more minor cards expected. I would have bid 1NT with this hand, barely, with a 2-5 range.

That "convention" was mostly for humor value, but it did create one of my favorite auctions ever. Red on white (hence, lots of minor stuff promised), I responded 1NT to a 1 opening, alerted as 2-5 HCP. Partner rebid 6 (after a double), which was right. We went down one when the spade King was in the wrong spot, but that meant that 5 or 5 made for the opponents. 6X-1 was a top.
