Stephen Tu
GIB bids w/♠3♥K983♦Kx♣AKQ9431♣-1♥;2♥? - 4♥;5♥ 2♥ defined as "12-17 total points", this should be reduced so it doesn't have to catch up later?
TylerE
Sounds about right to me. Basically the only hands GIB can have are 12-14 balanced, or 12-16 unbalanced or so. (E.g. a balanced hand too weak to open 1N and, or an unbalanced hand too weak to make a GF splinter.
barmar
Shouldn't that hand reevaluate to at least 18 points once the fit is discovered? I'll bet some players would splinter with that hand.
arigreen
Gib evaluates this hand as 17 total points (15 HCP + 2 for singleton + 1 for doubleton -1 for "wasted" honor in the doubleton suit). I know this is far from an optimal way to evaluate a bridge hand, but this is what Gib does. It would probably be a good idea to change the range of 2H to 12-17 total points, and have Gib bid 3H with 17-19.

This 12-17 thing is actually not quite playable.
arigreen
why does gib devaluate Kx?This is hardcoded into gib's algorithm for computing total points. I'm planning to experiment with better algorithms for evaluation. I agree that 16-18 look right for a double raise. Single raises can be 12-15, and 19+ can bid 4M or splinter.
