Codo
I do not like Easts pass. He has a close to maximum hand for his failure to open, the spade honours and the club length are working well, so I had bid 4 club. The lead was unlucky, but there is no safe lead from that hand. gnasher
It's automatic to bid on East's hand. He knows that everything fits really well. I'm closer to bidding 5♣ than to passing.
andy_h
4♣ is not remotely far at all. AK with a 5card suit and opps are likely to have a 9 card fit.

mcphee
What does E think a 4C bid looks like? You are not getting doubled, you just might even make 5C. It is important to do your part over these weak jumps or your side gets shut out. E should consider what they would do if their black suits were 4-4 and the same hand values. Bidding 4C increases your chances of getting a C lead should you defend, partner feels much better then :)
the hog
Easts pass over 3H is a shocker. Is his name Caspar Milquetoast by any chance?
655321
Yes, add me to those who think East should be bidding 4♣. But ... what did you think everyone would say? Naturally, seeing all 4 hands we unerringly notice that bidding works better than passing. Wouldn't it have been better to give just the East hand? Codo
How do yu see that bidding is better then passing? Simply beat 4 Heart by any lead but a diamond. So he asked us: What was the main reason for the bad result: The lead or the pass. And to decide this,we need to know both hands.
nigel_k
I agree with the people who said East should bid 4♣ but there is an issue about who gets to bid more with a shortage: the person who has the shortage or their partner who assumes it? Should West be tempted to bid 5♣ over 4♥ or must he assume partner has already counted on him for a singleton? Anyway on the actual auction I would lead a trump with West but a diamond would be the second choice.
hanp
I would give no blame for the diamond lead as I would have led a diamond. I would also bid 4C, especially at these colors.
Apollo81
No blame. I'd have duplicated all of the actions taken.
Vilgan
I'd have bid 4♣, but I'm a bit aggressive and would not blame partner for passing. With the west hand, I'd have also led a diamond.
