MarkDean
I would bid 5♣ the first time. If partner is 4243 I still want to play clubs, and I cannot imagine passing (although I know I play an old-fashioned style of takeout doubles where they deliver shortness in the suit doubled). gnasher
The main danger in acting immediately is that partner has a balanced 18-count. (I'm less worried about being carried to slam - partner will needs a very good hand to do that when he doesn't have heart shortage.) I think I'd take a chance and bid straight away. If I'd passed, I'd then raise to 6♣, because it might be cold, they might save, and I expect them to bid 5H anyway. If I'd passed twice, I'd certainly bid 6♣ on the next round, regardless of whether partner doubled.
