Non-vul, I have some sympathy for your choice, but the vulnerable 4H bidder is more likely to have the KH. What is wrong with a club? Anything could work, but a club is less likely to cost anything. mikeh Posted December 13, 2009 Report Share Posted December 13, 2009 Generally, I have found that leading from a jack is rarely an effective lead. You usually need to find partner with 2 honours in the suit to develop anything useful....altho, of course, we might need to find his King behind dummy's Ace. Leading from either a King or a Queen needs less. I find a lot of beginners hate leading from a King, while I often prefer it to any other honour....of course, it depends on the exact hand and auction..and the form of scoring. But I don't have that decision to make here. I'd probably choose a diamond at the table, with the heart Ace second, and club a distant third. The heart Ace is somewhat attractive because it is possible that we have to take our trick(s) in the suit before opener gets pitches on good clubs (or even diamonds) in dummy. However, while there are three players who may hold the King of hearts, only one of them is my partner....and the heart Ace probably needs more of a specific layout to win than does the diamond. My scoring on a scale of 0-100 is diamond 100, heart A 70 club 40 and trump 0. BTW, arguments for a club lead leave me cold. Leading from Jxx is not passive...it is incredibly dangerous. Give partner the Q with no 10, or the K with dummy holding Q10xx. And when it is passive, it blows a tempo on an auction on which opener rates to have a play for his contract, notwithstanding your trump holding. That doesn't mean it won't work, of course.
