Lead against a slam

1 on your right, you bid 1

No I don't.

Spade lead for me. K seems to cater to partner holding a trump trick or the J.

I'd rather mask my diamond holding and try to take two tricks there.

Dealer: East
Vul: ????
Scoring: IMP
J9843
Qxx
KQx
T9

1 on your right, you bid 1, LHO doubles and partner bids 4.

Rho bids 5 and LHO bids 6.

What's your lead?

unless I have managed to create the impression in RHO that I might have underled the A I also lead the K

K for me, too. I wouldn't do it, but I have to admit to being curious about what would happen on the lead of the Q. Ditto Phil by the way, with respect to the overcall. I pass 1. But if the person who overcalled drops dead after the auction, and I have to fill in to make the lead, it's a diamond.

Ditto a few on not overcalling 1, regardless of vuln for me.

I'd probably lead a trump. K also seems reasonable. Not sure how a heart could be right, and many ways it could be a disaster (Jx opposite AKxx for example).

Obviously, if spades are 2-2 we need to lead a spade

If declarer has one spade we must take partner's ace of spades before it disappears on hearts and wait for our diamond trick when LHO has AKJx hearts.

I'm struggling to find a hand where a diamond is right - you need partner to have a top heart(seriously unlikely - LHO bids slam missing KQ KQ in his suits?) preventing declarer throwing his diamond away AND assuming this won't allow declarer to establish diamonds to throw a heart when dummy has AJxx f/e. Not to forget ofc all the hands when you give the diamond suit away.

A heart is bizare - you need partner to have the K and probably the J or 10 (declarer can run it round to his J or 10 and then throw his diamond away)

A passive club seems pointless with KQ Q in the slot.

spade FTW.

It sounds like declarer is ready for a spade lead. Partner and both opps appear to be bidding on lots of distributional points, since I hold 8 HCP and opps are at 6 level with partner supporting spades. So, I lead a trump (the 10), and if I get in with the diamond K, I expect to lead another trump. Diamond K lead will hurt if RHO holds J and pard holds the 10.

Regards, Paul

tks, Scrote, for explaining why I led a spade instead of a club - in case the opps' bidding is shakey, the spade gives some additional chances and I am sure they have enough trumps not to be threatened by a trump lead. I just led a spade because it was closest to my right thumb. Opening leads are not my forte.

I might have chosen a different username, though.

Who said KQ Q are in the slot? Responder didn't guarantee the A of diamonds and AKJ of hearts for his double and raise. He just evaluated his hand and decided slam was the correct bid.

K of diamonds is necessary when declarer needs to set up hearts (losing 1 in the process) for diamond discards. One situation might be

Axx AKxx xxx Kxx opposite

x Jxx Ax AQJT9xx

would be one example where we need to lead the diamond now. Amusingly, a heart lead is the only lead that leads to 13 tricks on that layout :(

I wimped out and led a trump. Responder might be able to trump something someday, so maybe that will be a good thing.
