Pass or double

Recommended Posts

Playing in a rather weak field you, sitting in South, encounter this position:

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=sq5hj10652daj93c54]133|100|Scoring: MP

Bidding:

1-(3)-?[/hv]

You know East as an young agressive player. What's your choice and how much (%) do you consider that your choice is the percentage bid?

IMO _X = 10, _P = 9.

It's close (about 55%) because you are at the three level with only 8 HCP but

  • The whole 3-level is available to partner including a pass of 3X
  • You have both red suits.
  • Your HCP are in your's and partner's suits.

NegX looks normal.

I would not want to even consider passing. Given that the opps are weak players, I expect their preemptive suit to be semisolid even when they are white vs. red, my partner is unlikely to have wastage in that suit and I have support for everything, including spades if partner rebids them.

Edit: Oops, opponents are not weak players. But my answer is still the same.

Double seems automatic. Partner is not likely to be particularly enthusiastic about reopening on this auction, I like my pips, and I have decent support for whatever suit partner bids in response to the double.

yeah I must admit I am real tempted by neg X but count me in the passers since there are none yet.
