Cyberyeti
[hv=d=n&v=b&s=s3h96543dak75432c]133|100|Scoring: XIMP[/hv] Picked this up in the Tollemache (the competition where the 40 or so English/welsh counties' representative sides play each other in groups to qualify for a final). Interested to hear what you'd open. Some idiot (me) opens 5♦ in 3rd seat red all, my LHO held: [hv=d=n&v=b&s=s3h96543dak75432c]133|100|Scoring: XIMP[/hv] any suggestions what you should bid ? Cyberyeti
6♣ was bid at the table and rapidly given a message by partner that it was the wrong choice (A♥ and QJxx♣) for +500. This was not however enough to get a swing in on the board. At all 3 other tables 3♦ was opened, 2 played there doubled for -200, one bid 5Cx for -200. Nobody tried 3N (the hand opposite the clubs is KJx, K10xx, QJ108, xx for 9 easy tricks and probably more).
lmilne
I agree with preempting in diamonds. The suit is enough for a 3-level preempt, but obviously the 5-card side suit adds a lot of playing strength. We could be cold for 6 opposite some wondrous passed hands, but I don't think the side suit is enough to upgrade 2 levels of preemption. I would open 4♦, 5 at favourable. Think 6♣ is the best bid on your opponents hand. Tricky though.
