The star symbol should be seen as an indication of experience or accomplishment. It is not necessarily an indication of skill. When I'm in BBO with my friend at midnight, none of the above necessarily apply. My bridge just *might* be worse than what I got my star for." I think that might be implicit for anybody :-) Please note, I'm not talking for myself (although for the purposes of what's "the important game" for me, it's still correct).
