Opponents have reputations as being conservative bidders. No discussion on the double (if you want to blame that, it's fine).
Jlall
I think passing is really bad if opps are good, esp if they are conservative and good. Just bid 3N imo. I don't like the double either, north should not really be interested in playing 3N opposite one stopper. I think just bidding 4C is better. Oh and welcome back clee, hope you're makin a comeback! effervesce
In a GF auction, pass is forcing and X is penalty. So with takeout hands you can just pass, and partner knows you do not have a hand that can penalise them. So with this hand, north has a clearcut 4♣ bid. Codo
To me double from both sides is still take out, because this is our meta-agreement. So I dislike south pass of north double. I had not liked to bid 3 NT with just one stopper, so I had bid 4 Diamond, reaching4 Spade/ 5 Diamond on the way.
cherdanno
I don't get this. Isn't double penalty here? Pass is forcing, so double is penalty. Are you playing this differently here because you need several ways to get to 3N?

What do you do with any hand that wants to get to 3N? 3S shows spades so I guess you're just outta luck if you want to play 3N and have no stopper! helene_t
As I understood it, in standard methods dbl is penalty in FP situations. I am not convinced that that is optimal (not that it is particularly simple), but given those methods, North has to bid 4♣.
P_Marlowe
Hi, #1 it is certainly a matter of agreement, if the 1S opening is still in range or not, I think the hand is to weak#2 Pass over 3H is certainly the only real possible action, even knowing about the diamond fit does not change this#3 The X is certainly penalty, if you follow standard FP rules, and hence South does not have a pen. X, I think South should bid 4C, he has 5-5, he should show it.#4 The final pass is ok as well All in all the blame goes to 100% to North, as long as the partnership style is to open the South hand. With kind regardsMarlowe
andy_h
I have sympathy for double but I prefer 4♣. I like to bid my suits especially when they're 5-5 and that the opponents are known to be conservative.
