Do you call the director? If you call the director LHO says "oh but there were so many options it's completely normal to take my time". Anyway TD nods and instructs you to play on. 4H is 1 down, vs 3N partner has an easy diamond lead and is 3 off. 4S is down 1 only if p leads diamonds from AJxxx Do you call the director again?

Hi,

sure, LHO can take his time as long as he pleases, but after that

his partner should avoid making bids, which are close at best.

If I interpret the auction right, 3S was still searching for the right game,

leaving NT as an option.

Partner said, he wants to play 3NT, and thats it, Pass is basically clear

cut, so the TD should adjust to 3NT -?.

If opener would have bid 4S, than I would have said, ok 4S stands.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Sure call the director. And LHO should learn at some point that it's not the hesitation he has to defend, it's his partner's action over it. Opener actually had an interesting problem but pass is most certainly an LA, if not actually the right bid.

Of course, the responders are right --except that 4S would not have been acceptable, either.

Unfortunately, too many club-level directors would rule that a pair who would bid that way* even without the hesitation probably don't know how to evaluate after a BIT, telling you to be grateful u are not defending 4S.

*High reverse plus failure to choose 4S/3S.

Passing with the stiff Q of hearts is not a logical alternative imo and I think I could make that case.

That being said, call the director because maybe I am wrong and a poll of my peers will demonstrate that it is a logical alternative. It is the director who should decide if it's an LA not me.
