I would double, for two reasons:

1. Easier to find a major suit fit, i.e. if I bid 1NT it might go

(1) 1NT all pass

and with double it might now go

(1) dbl pass 1M

pass 2M

etc.

2. If pard bids 1, I can do a slight upgrade and rebid 1NT. If he bids 2, I have an easy raise to 2NT.

I would feel a little uncomfortable if it went

(1)-x-(2)-2

(pass)-?

Also

(1)-x-(pass)-1

(pass)-1NT

could take us too high as I may be unable to reach dummy's diamonds.

OTHO dbl helps us find a major suit fit.

Doesn't seem to matter much. Or am I missing something?

Double is not terrible. With a 17-count, I could rebid NT after a diamond call from partner. If I had the same hand but minors reversed, and RHO opened 1, the situation is worse. Over 1, partner may be able to get his diamonds off his chest at a lower level, which might help.

I don't have the traditional upgrade to justify aggression, but I do have a lot of positional strengths.

I mean, in practice I'd bid 1NT, but I think double is reasonable.

That is just about the only bad thing that can happen with double. But I don't think it's a likely follow-up. And even if it happens it should make, as pard rates to have Kxxxx and a few scraps on the side.

So you're bidding (1)-1NT right away then?

I don't think she means 1NT will be too high, but that the 1NT rebid after doubling is too big an overbid (it usually shows 19-20 or perhaps 19-21) and partner will raise us too high.

I would bid 1NT like most of the others, and fwiw if you do choose double I think it's clear to pass 1.

Chicken.

If you bid 1NT, partner's will undervalue his hand -- he always does in this situation. This time, he will be right.
