Partner has four decent clubs. Close whether I should chance passing or not, but as I think of hands for partner I'm going for it. We may even make if we weren't about to bid game. Plus he is short in hearts so I don't see anywhere I want to go anyway.

Game (3NT) is far away with at most 1 heart in partner's hand. Only disaster is -600, which I find hard to imagine. The opening lead can only help us. I'll go for it. Opportunities like this don't come by often.

I thought it was fairly standard that a redouble of a stopper asking bid (such as cuebids and fourth suit) showed some length, without a stopper, typically xx or xxx. I would say that in this case, it also denies three hearts (since that is the other feature that the fourth suit is asking for).

I would bid 2, NF.

From the responses so far, it seems that I am wrong about the standard. That doesn't stop me from posting this though.

I wouldn't think of 4SF as a "stopper asking bid". It's just an artificial forcing bid. It neither asks for nor shows anything, players continue to bid naturally over it which may or may not involve bidding notrump with a club stopper.

yes, yes, and yes. And expect to wrap this around a froggy LHO.

Green card for me.

I have never heard of a XX showing xx.

Cute.

The point is, of course, that it is not about XX showing xx, but that XX denies a stopper, pass shows half to one stopper and NT shows that the suit is well stopped.

I found a link, unfortunately in Swedish, to a convention that is fairly standard in Sweden. As you may be able to recognize, it applies in situations where a stopper ask is playing some role. The examples that they give are:

1-1-Dbl-2;

3-Dbl-??

(a cue which will often ask for a stopper)

And

1-Pass-2-Pass

2-Pass-3-Dbl

??

(a typical fourth suit auction, with stopper asking playing some role)

I was obviously wrong in thinking that this was played fairly universally in expert circles.

different level, different possibilities, trini. Those auctions are not the same. If you have ever gotten a nice plus 1920 from an opponent who made a premature cute double on KQXX of an artificial forcing 2-level call (like Jacoby), you would see the virtue of redouble here to show a suggestion to play the hand at this strain.

Here is what I think is standard:

At a low level, XX is to play.

Over a primarily stopper asking bid at the 3-level, pass denies a good stopper, XX shows a non-positional stopper, and NT shows a good stopper. With a half stopper, you can pass and bid NT if partner redoubles.

Over cuebids, XX shows first round control and thus no worry about the lead.

might not be perfect by everyone's standards, but that's perfect for me.

Rik,

after the aoction up to 3 XX shows hard stopper where I live, pass at most half a stopper and NT something like KJx. But this is not true for the given sequence. XX is a suggestion to play. But for me this could be 4153 too, because 4054 hands are so rare....

So I must bid, because I dislike playing 3-3 fits. I would try 2 Spade.
