gwnn
xxx9xxxxxxxxx opp AT9xxAKJT9xxx 1♣-p-1♥-2♦4♥-p-p-4♠X-p-p-p imps nobody vulnerable. this was worth -800, and we weren't happy with the result or one another's bidding
jdonn
I'll call this one unlucky. I mean could south have caught any worse at all? I guess he could double 4♥ instead but that looks like 590 or 690 anyway.
Jlall
4S bid is silly, perfect hand to X 4H with. North assumed south was 5-6 I guess, seems reasonable. Sometimes partner has the worst possible hand and they make.
Fluffy
North wasn't on the same wavelenght this time, he should bid 5♦ IMO. But south could shut up as well
hatchett
I also much prefer X and would pass 4♠ with the weak hand
gwnn
Doesn't S bid 2NT with a 5-6? Then 4S should be 4-6? Not saying this particular 4-6, maybe KQJ KQJ or something.
655321
Doesn't S bid 2NT with a 5-6? Then 4S should be 4-6? Not saying this particular 4-6, maybe KQJ KQJ or something.Don't know if he will bid 2NT with all 5-6's, you could make a case for it though. I suppose the -800 lost 9 IMPs to 420, so getting out for 500 would have saved 7 IMPs or so. But even so, whether or not North should have bid 5♦ doesn't seem so crucial to me, because I don't like the 4♠ bid at all. If partner had a heart trick or two amongst his 4 hearts, you still go for the same 500 or 800, but 4♥ doesn't make.

If you are always going to drive to at least 4S (which is the case with a lot of 6-5s) you should start with 2D first. If you bid 2N and they compete to 4H you can no longer show your 6th diamond, and doubling shows something more like a strong 5-5. I think this is fairly normal procedure as long as you aren't worried about 2D being passed out.

benlessard
4S is terrible. I think pass is better than X, sure our diamonds are great but the hand looks like a minimum to me and they are NV.
Fluffy
my style is that this kind of bidding suggest 6-4 rhater than 6-5. I normlly bid spades first with that holding.
