wank
partner isn't guaranteed to have a penalty pass and even if he does, our defensive contribution may very total 1 trick and we're going to get the wrong lead, so i don't want to double. if he doesn't have a penalty pass and the bidding goes XX - 2♦ - X or some such we'll feel a trifle sick that we forgot to bid our AKQxx. gnasher
Double. Finishing in 2♦ is only likely to be bad if partner is something like 4153 or 5143. If he's 4252, double may work out well. And if he's got a penalty double, double is an easier route to a good score than trying to make 3NT. andy_h
Not to mention RHO's silence which increases a tad more that partner may have a penalty pass. If LHO does indeed have a decent hand he may decide to bid his 2nd suit, diamonds, or maybe he might raise himself to 2♠. I've seen too many of these offshape hands with shortage in LHO's suit that double almost always turned out to be the best action. Just be thankful we weren't 1255 and it had gone 1d-1s-p-p. jdonn
Double, feel very strongly! Next time you have an 18 count with 6 spades and there is a 1♠ overcall on your right, remember this hand.

nigel_k
Double. I might bid 2♣ with a spade void or 6-5 or softer values but this hand is far from useless on defence.
kenrexford
Double, feel very strongly! Next time you have an 18 count with 6 spades and there is a 1♠ overcall on your right, remember this hand. Bah! You double and they bid 2♦ in that scenario, making three. You bid 2♣ instead and they bid 2♠ and THEN partner pounces. I'm all in for low-level doubles. One partner of mine and I hit more stuff down low than a Vegas call girl, but sometimes you just have to bid what you are looking at. 2♣ for me. Grommet1
I think 2♣ gets us to the right place more often, so that's my MP bid. At IMPS, I'll go for the swing, which is less likely, but could win the match. Of course, at either form of scoring, you will have to watch your partner (try to) resist the urge to huff and puff if you bid 2♣ and it's wrong. peachy
2C for me. I am not completely opposed to Dbl, but there are too many hands for partner where he might leave 1SX in (if he actually had a trap pass hand) but we can't set them. Plus, my diamonds should be three cards. Plus, what will I do if partner pulls Dbl to 2D? Pass or 3C?
jdeegan
:) Any allowances for table feel here? Reading pard is illegal, and you have to bend over backwards not to do this, but opps are fair game. It's either jdonn's heaven or 2♣ is obvious. If you can't sense the difference you need to take up high stakes poker. I have a Tuesday night game that's just for you. Come on by.
