dellache
I see nothing really wrong in East's 1NT : (8)9-11, dull shape, I don't really care about having ♥xxxx and I want to bid my hand because game is still possible. OTOH I would not have bid 1♠ : bad suit, no real lead directing values, wrong shape, borderline hand in term of HCP, low ODR. Bidding 1♠ isn't terrible though. I'd give 100% blame to West if any, and give full credit to NS for taking the PEN at these colours.
Jlall
1N is a stupid bid, just XX. Not sure why people are still bidding 1N on this hand, it's almost 2010 people!
hotShot
If West is allowed to open 1♠ with this junk opposite a passed partner, than his bid includes all potential values East might have. So East has no reason to bid 1NT.If West bid on less than the agreed strength, the blame goes to West, butif West has bid within the agreed range, the blame goes to East. What was the agreement? gnasher
18 HCP, two balanced hands, no fit, and non-vulnerable. It doesn't sound such a bad idea to reach 1NT. I'd probably have had the same auction, except that they wouldn't have doubled me.
zheddh
really dislike the overcall
655321
I would have had the same auction too (and been doubled :)), although perhaps before 2010 I will learn not to bid 1NT as East. The West hand is not great, but failing to overcall 1♠ really seems soft to me. W/R, takes the whole 1 level away, and maybe partner can raise to take away even more room. Codo
I had no reason to bid 1 ♠. If partner has different choices for a lead, every one will be fine. And I like to have some vvalues, so that partner can bid 1 NT with his hand. Of course if you play a style, where you are allowed to bid on this sh.. , you should pass 1 Spade X and pray. If you XX you increase your problem, don`t you?
andy_h
I'd overcall with West's hand too and not feel shameful about it. We have the spade suit, we're w/r, and I would be very happy if partner can support us too even if it's only a meager 2♠ raise.

Still don't understand the desire to bid 1N when you can just play a natural XX and have no risk involved at all while still showing values so if it's your hand for a partscore or a game partner can bid. When both opponents have bid it is easy to get doubled in 1N, and it's likely partner has a light overcall. You are super exposed if you are forced to bid 1N with this hand. Still, they might be bidding with nothing so you have to be able to show some values. If this is one of those "ZOMG LETS BID 1N BEFORE THEY DO" type things I think it's pretty silly. This is not MP white/white.
