Cascade
[hv=d=n&v=e&n=sqt543h7dak764ct5&w=sa6ha92djt952caq9&e=s7hkqt6d8ckj87432&s=skj982hj8543dq3c6]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - 1♠ 2♣ 4♠ Dbl Pass Pass Pass This hand was from the European Championships. At the table that I was kibitzing the West player made the IMO very poor call of doubling 4♠. One of the commentators suggested that 4NT should be a good raise to 5♣ in this situation (West seat). I normally use 4NT as a two-suiter here. What do you think is the best use of 4NT? TIA
winkle
Funny that you ask - this auction came up in the recent USBF finals (board 23) and Zia-Rosenberg uses that exact treatment (4N = club slam try). So you can count that as one endorsement. On a frequency basis it makes sense to me.
Cascade
Thanks. When I get time I will do a simulation to see what the frequency and likely gains are from the two treatments.
inquiry
Hmmm..... Here is what I like. Dbl is for takeout until we have found a fit (regardless of level).2NT/4NT are artificial. So, if auciton is..... (4♠)-4NT is a two suiter If auction is (1♠)-2♣-(4♠)-Dbl would be the two suiter, this frees up 4NT. The question becomes should a direct 5♣ be the stronger bid or should 4NT be the stronger bid? I like the 4NT showing good raise or better, and immediate club raise as weaker.
