Uninteresting evaluation question

Agree with 2N, in spite of the upgrading junkies around here.

We have 2 more controls than usual, AK9xx and a married 10. I think this is just enough to upgrade.

However, I don't object to 1 - 1M - 2N. I hate 1 - reverse, since more than half of my points are in my short suits.

I'd open 2N, but would be far more comfortable doing so if our range was 20-21. As it is, I think it extremely close, and would not criticize any partner for choosing 1. I would think such a partner to be overly timid if our range was 20-21.

While having 11/19 of our hcp in our short suits is bad, we do have 8, count them, 8 control! We will not often hold that many in a balanced 20 count. And we have a 5 card suit headed by the AK and no worries (for 3N) about our weakest suit.

So I upgrade.

I think upgrading the value is clear. The only reason not to choose 2NT is the shape, which is reasonable and a matter of taste.

We know aces are worth more than 4, and an AK combination is certainly worth more than 7 (the K is just as good as the A). Here also is a decent 5 card suit, a touching ten, and possibly a working 9 and 8. I would rate this hand as ~22 points value even before any fit.

Maybe I am just one of those "upgrade junkies" Phil is talking about :P

I would simply open 1. I like to look for reasons to upgrade to 1NT but I hate auctions which start 2NT so I am far more reluctant to upgrade at that level.

Do I have a hand which would benefit from being declarer in NT? Not particularly

Is my natural suit bid a good suit I feel happy mentioning? Yes

Will I be able to express my strength if I choose the suit opening? Probably

Clearly there are bad things which might happen if we choose 1 - we could get passed out when we have a game on, or the opponents might be able to get a cheap bid or two in, and disrupt us. But equally there are bad things which could happen after 2NT - we could miss 6, or partner with 55 in the majors might insist on one of his suits thinking we must have a fit.

So all things considered, I don't see the need to upgrade here.

I don't know. I think the hand is worth an upgrade for 2NT, but I fear we may miss 6m, and the (my) system over 2NT sucks for that, when pard will obviously start by looking for some Major suit. Also, if pard bids 1NT/1 with Qxx, he will receive the lead if we happen to play NT from his hand but it's actually a very minor concern. I don't care if pard bid 4 (5-5MM) over 2NT, BTW.

So I may open 1 and reverse 2, or open 2NT. It will really depend on my mood.

The only thing I wouldn't do is open 1 and rebid 2NT, that would be underbiding imo.

I open 1 and rebid 2 over a response of 1, 1 or 1NT.

At IMPs, I want to show both my strength and my distribution. I want to get to a minor suit slam if it is there, and a minor suit game if it is better than 3NT.

The chance of getting to 5 or 6 of a minor when it is right after opening 2NT is very small.

At matchpoints, there is more to be said for opening 2NT.

<!-- ONEHAND begin --><table border='1'> <tr> <td> <table> <tr> <td> Dealer: </td> <td> East </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Vul: </td> <td> Both </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Scoring: </td> <td> IMP </td> </tr> </table> </td> <td> <table> <tr> <th> <span class='spades'> ♠ </span> </th> <td> AK </td> </tr> <tr> <th> <span class='hearts'> ♥ </span> </th> <td> A5 </td> </tr> <tr> <th> <span class='diamonds'> ♦ </span> </th> <td> J1085 </td> </tr> <tr> <th> <span class='clubs'> ♣ </span> </th> <td> AK964 </td> </tr> </table> </td> <td>  </td> </tr> </table><!-- ONEHAND end -->

RHO passes.  What do you open?  If you open 1, what do you plan to rebid?

A 2NT opening would show 20-22.

With most of my hcp in my short suits i would try 2nt, but dislike so wide a range.
