N Europe signals

My (Romanian) partner likes UD attitude and STD count. I think this signaling method is especially popular in Sweden and Norway.

If partner leads the Ace and you have 2 low, what do you play? How about 3 or 4 low? Is there any other thing to know about this method?

I think it is most popular in Norway and slowly spreading to sweden.

Idea is to make clear signals so if you show attitude you don't mix count and if you show count you don't mix attitude.

So you have to agree which to show in what trick and then only show that there.

Usually you show attitude first which should be clearly shown with small or high spot.

Next trick in same suit is going to be count and you now play high for remaining even count and low for remaining odd count.

Then 3rd trick can be lavinthal if you have enough cards left.

It is more common that you show count at first trick. What I saw when doing vugraph in Sariselkä was that Norwegians did play: Xx xxX xxXx from small cards.

To me it looks like bad method to play 2nd lowest from 4 because it is hard to read if that is lowest or not. (declarer may hide smaller cards)

So either you should play higher from 4 cards or use udca to make count more clear if it is odd or even in first trick.

Levin and Weinstein play this also.

As for your other question, whether to give attitude or count when partner leads an ace vs suit it totally depends on what dummy has etc.

Typically I would disagree that encouraging shows the queen, I think the first priority is to show a doubleton if it's possible for you to have one. This means sometimes discouraging with the queen if partner trying to give you a ruff would set up a trick for them (eg Jxxx in dummy).

I've played this once, 32 boards, and I found it very hard. We had a lot of misunderstandings because we didn't have agreements when to show count and when attitude, and what to do in doubt.

From this I can conclude 2 things:

- it's not advisable to play this in a pickup partnership if one of the players is not used to this method.

- you'll need to work on this with your regular partner to have good agreements when to show what.

As gnasher says from 2 small you play the highest. This denies the queen, if partner thinks you have a doubleton he can cash the king and see what happens as you will then give count.

So from 53 play the 5

from 853 also play the 5 then the 8

from Q53 play the 3

at least that's what I do.

the killer holding is J10x I find.

I've played this method before and it seems ok/ordinary. There's nothing special about it - give attitude/count as you would with the carding method that you're used to or any previous agreements you've had in certain situations (like information based on auction/what's in dummy etc).

To add to this theme---why not play Ace for attitude/K for count,

coming back to original theme pard leads the Ace you have xx be it 34,one assumes pard has King as well, then show the xx,and get a ruff, but i agree,if Q in dummy u still want the ruff regards
