I don't think much of the choices you've offered. We have four-card club support with everything in partner's suits, and partner has a good hand. Why would we chose a non-fit or a pass?

The only question is how many clubs to bid. If partner were 3154 he'd show his shape with 2, so his most likely shape is 2254. If he has Ax xx AQJxx AKxx we make 5 if clubs are 3-2, but that hand is probably too good to have bid only 2. I bid 3.

3. Partner has a few extra values and is probably trying to give us a chance to pass so he's probably 3154. I'm not sure what partner's 1NT opening style is but with 2254 and 15-16ish I would have hoped he'd open it 1NT. So, maybe typical hands might be Axx x AJxxx AKxx or Kxx x AQxxx AKxx or Kxx x AQJxx AKxx or Qxx x AQJxx AKxx. I think game's pretty unlikely.

I think a lot of variations are possible in partner's shape (see below), he just doubles on a hand with extras where he is happy for us to pass.

I bid 4 we fit partner extremely well and could have enough for game. Ax xx AQTxx AKxx for example. Or Axx x AJxxx AKxx. Maybe x Kx AQxxxx AKxx. They may not all be cold games but they are games I want to be in. And none are 3 rebids the round before so they are all possible.

Can we please include "other" as an option in bridge polls? I can't remember the last one when it wasn't needed.

Interesting, I hadn't considered 4. I guess the question now is, given there was a BIT before partner's X does that suggest one LA over the others. Given the answers in the polling and responses it seems the LA are 3 or 4. At the table I bid 3 and partner made 4 but the opponents wanted to get to play 2x. Partner was 2164 (although I agree with Jlall that 2nt would have been better for this shape).

:D P or 3 depending on the state of the match. Pard is advertising 1-3-5-4 distribution with a good 15 up to 17 HCP. 3 figures to make safely enough. Chances to barbeque 2 look pretty good, but once in a while it will make. If we are winning comfortably I bid 3, otherwise with 23 HCP + or - and they have only seven trumps (usually) I pass, He did not open 1NT with 15-17 HCP, so his chances of being 2-2-5-4 are reduced. Also, he is not supposed to value finessible heart honors for his double.

How partner can have anything more than horrible 16 count? I had a feeling that competitive auction changes the rules of openers rebid and 3 before would be jsut invitational and non-forcing so partner can't have good enough hand for game to be good after 2. Also setting 2 is unlikely gamble in teams so in my option automatic raise to 3.

i don't see what's wrong with X on a 2164 shape - opposite 5413, it's likely 2s is the best contract.

:P With 5, I wud have bid 1 over 1. Overuse of the negative double at the 1 level irritates me no end. No need to gamble, just bid zee hand.

I truly prefer the old fashioned sputnick double where u can bid 1 on 4 pieces if they are good enuf to play opposite 3 small. I am nv and at the 2 level on an undisclosed and playable 7 card fit early in a competitive auction - sweet.
