Fluffy
auction ain't ideal, but we are having a fit somewhere so lets double.
jdonn
Why are we having a fit somewhere? LHO has 2-5 diamonds, RHO has 3-5(6?) diamonds. So their combined minimum is 5, not that they have 5 this time but they certainly haven't promised a fit. Meanwhile in the majors we have 8 or fewer since LHO is 2+ and RHO is 3+. And RHO is more likely 4 than 3 in either major when he bids this way plus LHO could have 3 in either major anyway, so it's quite likely we don't have a major suit fit at all. So to summarize. They may not be in a fit, we may not have a fit at all, our best possible fit in a major is 8 cards and that is optimistic. And both sides are vul! I pass. andy_h
Double. This is MPs and I definitely do not want to give up a possible major suit fit. Being in a 4-3 fit is possibly ok but the opponents may not always double us or even yet partner could pass our double!
maggieb
Double. Josh I think you are being way too conservative. If partner has a 4 card major we will come out on top most of the time, if he doesn't but he has 5 diamonds I would also expect to beat them, so we are really worried about partner being 3343 or maybe 3334, but if he's 3334 maybe they will bid overcompete anyway. All in all double just seems totally normal/obvious/wtp to me, and I would be hugely surprised if it was a long term loser.
jdonn
I don't expect to do particularly well even if he has a 4 card major. I think the vul and the fact we can't even have a 9 card major suit fit are such turnoffs that I'm still not tempted. But yes if partner passed that would probably be good, although if I was getting 200 undoubled I would probably still score just fine. maggieb
Also I want to add that a lot of the time when partner is 3343 he can pass anyway, which may also turn out fine.
Jlall
Yeah we probably have an 8 card major suit like 40 % of the time or something I think jdonn (if RHOs possible shapes are 3451, 4351, 4441, 4450, 3460 4360). When we don't partner might well be able to pass our double, or bid clubs effectively. Anyways I X.
