Law 9

Look at law 9A3, in substance :

" during the play period, any player can call attention to an irregularity ( except dummy who has to wait the end of play )"

"during the play period, any player can try to prevent another player from committing an irregulerity."

Now look at 9A1 :

" during the auction period, any player can call attention to an irregularity."

Here it is not precised that during this auction period, any player can try to prevent an irregularity by another player. It is only when the irregularity is committed that a player can call attention to it. OK ?

So, if we take this " à la lettre ", a player is not allowed to prevent a defender from leading out of turn, because we are still in the auction period. It is only when the LOOT is made that he can call attention to it (except presumed dummy who is now dummy ). :)

Do you agree or not ?

Many thanks in advance

Law 9A3

When an irregularity has occurred dummy may not draw attention to it during the play period but may do so after play of the hand is concluded. However any player, including dummy, may attempt to prevent another player's committing an irregularity (but for dummy subject to Laws 42 and 43).

The second sentence, the one that allows "to prevent another player's committing an irregularity", is not explicitly restricted to the play period and so I think this is allowed at all times.

Thank you Robin. You are surely right. This paragraph 3 seems to concern the play period (only) but in reality it probably concerns also the auction period.

Nevertheless, I think it should have been preferable to separate things and to make clearer what happens during auction and what happens during play. :)
