I would rate pass as my only real option. If I get to make a takeout double of hearts that will be great (I will bid again to show my strength). If I get to double them in 1N that's great (strong hand with good clubs). If LHO passes and partner passes it may not be the end of the world, we are collecting tricks in the 100s and they probably have a heart fit (or partner is very weak). It's true we might miss a game in this way, but it's not that likely of an occurance.

My distant second choice would be 1D. It's not really a great start to describing my hand, and may be more likely to be passed out than 1C by the opponents anyways.

I am not a fan of 1N with a stiff heart at all.

I am even less of a fan of doubling with a stiff heart and a hand that cannot control the auction.

RHO opens 1.

What do you bid?

How do you rate all available bids that seem plausible for this hand?

X seems the uncomfortable and only choice planning on a NT rebid over s probably will raise 1 to 3

Depends who I'm playing with.

With my current partner, this is an easy 1 overcall (the minimum for which as it's the least exclusive possible opener is a decent opening hand). I can then rebid 1N over partner's presumed 1 response (15 to a bad 19).

In a previous partnership I overcalled 1N on 15-20 so would have done that.

playing standard-ish methods you have to double.

I've yet to hear what bad is likely to occur after passing, other than the offensiveness of passing with such a good hand.

Well what can happen, and what has happened, is that my LHO is JDonn who responds 1 on drek and RHO makes a single raise. We have an easy takeout double, but good luck getting to 3N opposite partner's 8 count.

But I do agree I would pass. I guess I'm just not doing back handsprings over it.

It has happened? When did I do that to you?

Maybe what really happened is the opponents had 3 and 14 and you didn't have game anyway. Or maybe you doubled then cuebid and partner bid 3NT. Or maybe you had the strength for 3NT but it was going down on a heart lead. Or maybe jdonn passed the opening bid anyway since he isn't a very light responder relative to common practice in his circles.

Seems pretty easy, Whatever partner bids over my X I cuebid next and he bids 3N?

No it hasn't happened against you LOL. Just someone LIKE you :P

Actually I do remember a 22 count against one of your contemporaries at Denver and staring in disbelief and passing as the bidding started 1 - pass - 1. I think my +150 against some part score won the board, but I don't remember for sure.

agree interesting problem--for my 2 cents i bid 1n/t over 1cl pard if sitting with hts, should transfer or stayman, that way we get to game either spades or n/t

I'd like to compete too, and if Bailey Cuebids are in your arsenal, I'd overcall 2C!

I don't have the 5-5 shape but my 18 count shouldn't get me in trouble at his low level.

Bailey combines Michaels and un2NT and ALWAYS gets the Spade suit into the fray:

( 1C ) - 2C! = Spades and one of the 2 unbid ( Diam or Hts ).
