Will everyone bid 6C?

Recommended Posts

I'll guess that 4H was a transfer to spades. 5N cancelled the spade message and transferred to clubs.

How after all, do most pairs get clubs played by opener after a 2N opening?

It troubles me a little that opener has such a good hand for clubs and my guess doesn't allow that he ever showed this.

On the other hand, responder has to think that 6C has reasonable play against many 2N openers. Perhaps opener wanted to bid 7C and had to show restraint.

As far as choice of slams, it seems like clubs will be the best slam against most of opener's holdings so I doubt the choice was offered.

I think the Italians play 2N p 4C=hearts, 2N p 4D=spades. By extension they probably play 2N p 4H=clubs and 2N p 4S=diamonds.

After 4H 4S was probably a cuebid, and 5N was a transfer to 6C. Yes usually 5N means pick a slam, but here west really wants east to declare so pick a slam really just means always pick clubs since otherwise I would have to bid 6C on hands that always want to play clubs.

I am not familiar with the highest if the levels, but at the level I move, I haven't EVER seen a 5NT pick a slam made by a european pair. This allways sounds like an american thing to me.

Retransfer sounds like the best explanation, since east has the alltime nuts he is never rejecting anything.

Pretty sure the concept of 5N pick a slam was orginally Italian, and that I have seen them use it. Not sure about other Europeans. Anyways an analagous auction that comes up in a reasonably common situation is:

2N 3S

3N 4D

4S 5N

3S=forces 3N

4D=slam try in clubs

4S=answering keycards

5N=transfer back to clubs rather than pick a slam, because the whole point of 4D showing clubs is to rightside clubs.

I think Jlall and Fluffy are right. If they're playing 4C=H and 4D=S, then 4H=C, but 4S may not be a cue (showing a spade control). It may be a step response showing a high level of interest in clubs because space is limited for cue bids. 5N would be a transfer.
