Help! No text in player info or claim boxes

i've been using the web version of BBO on my MacBook pro for over a year. After a 2 week hiatus, I logged into BBO this week and it no longer works properly.

the issues:

1. when i click on a player name, the info box that pops up contains their flag, but no text.

2. no text appears in the chat area, either text that i type or messages that others have typed.

3. i can send chats that others can see, but i can not see what i'm typing.

4. bidding and the play of the hand work normally.

5. when someone makes a claim, only the yes and no buttons show up--there is no text that says "i claim the remaining tricks" etc.

help! this has been driving me nuts. is anyone else having this issue?

Sounds like you are missing the font Arial. I had the same problem (missing text in the places you describe) on my Debian Linux system and solved it by telling Debian to substitute a different font for Arial.

I'm not sure, on a Mac, what might have happened for Arial to disappear, or how you might go about fixing it, but hopefully this points you in the right direction.

rwbarton's theory sounds right to me. The web-client depends on the computer in question having an Arial font installed in order to display text in the areas that you describe. Text in other areas is generated using a font that is contained in the software itself.

I am sorry, but I am not a Mac expert and I have no idea what could have happened to your Arial font or how you might go about getting it back. I know that, for Windows purposes at least, it is best if a "unicode" version of the Arial font is available. The past few versions of Windows have come with this type of font preinstalled. Apple tends to be good at things like unicode support so, if you can find an Arial font and figure out how to install it, you will probably be OK.

If you don't know how to deal with this problem yourself, all I can really suggest is that you do a web search, contact Apple technical support, or try to find a friend with strong Mac skills who might be willing to help you.

I didn't think this sort of thing was supposed to happen to Macs
