partner is balancing with 1D

Is this a standard way to cheat? If you really want to make a penalty double, but your double is takeout, and your p may not make a takeout double? To make an insufficient bid, and then double?? I guess you'd only do it if you knew what contract you wanted to play aftr they ran and you didn't need your p's help to find out.

It's such an obvious way to cheat that you specifically aren't allowed to replace an insufficient bid with a double.*

[*OK, in some circumstances you can, but then the double isn't penalties]

Double. If double is not penalty, pass and hope partner doubles.
You are playing penalty double here ? Why ? Partner may easily have 5D+4M and you may easily have both majors 5/4 not wanting to overcall because your suit is weak.

We have had this debate many times, and it is clear double as penalty or as takeout both have a lot of merit.

Agreed...I am old enough to remember the old days when this would be penalty showing a hand like you hold that had no bid over 1 and wasn't strong enough for 1NT.

As far as being 5/4 in the majors for example, I overcall in a major on 65432 if my hand is almost opening bid strength or better so that isn't an issue for me or I might gamble a take out double if 44M with opening strength and 2.

While I could be 44M and have passed, I prefer penalty here as so many opps just rebid 2 on hands that should clearly pass.

IMHO, 2m contracts don't get whacked nearly enough and if the opps make it still isn't game.

Yes two sides to this argument but I double in either case with this good a hand.
