gwnn
Suppose you go shopping in a supermarket in a foreign country, you want to buy a bottle of ketchup. You narrowed it down to two brands. They are both imported from the same country. They have the same price and weight and tomato content. But one of them is just like "quality ketchup." The other one has many superlatives written on it, with exclamation points. Which one would you buy? Why?
Echognome
The one that says "catsup".
JoAnneM
All else being equal I buy the one with the most appealing packaging. Why not rewarding good marketing.
Elianna
I can't imagine they're too expensive. Buy both and see which you like better. Give the one you don't like as much away.
Jlall
!!!!!!!!!!!! is tacky and numerous words are tacky, I'd go with quality ketchup.
andy_h
The one that's closest to me and head to the chocolate section.
matmat
i'll buy the "Hunt's"
hotShot
I'll try the modest one, expecting that because they obviously spend less money for marketing they could invest into better ingredients.

kenberg
Modern life offers too many choices. I am pleased to report that my wife is the quickest decider on these things of anyone I know. Sometimes we end up with pineapple chunks instead of pineapple rings, but we are in and out. I assure you that she has no idea of what country the ketchup she buys comes from. But I voted for modest. I can't resist a poll. Modesty is good. This. or they're simply pocketing more of the sticker price. btw.. i got it right. :P

This. or they're simply pocketing more of the sticker price. btw.. i got it right. Or bigger profit margins..... I would buy both and see which one tasted better. I would expense them both as "R&D" and claim a deduction. Time to "catch up" wouldn't you say? :D
Fluffy
I'll try the modest one, expecting that because they obviously spend less money for marketing they could invest into better ingredients. Or it could be because they have more money because their product is good . You might invest a lot of money in merchandising when your product is average-good, but you are not doing so when it is awful. The good with the expensive merchandising might be better or worse, but it cannot be awful, that's what I'd pick.
gwnn
Well I bought the one with the exclamation points and now I bought the one without them. matmat indeed got it right, it was Hunt's vs Libby's, I must say Hunt's tastes much better. Well I exaggerated a little, the two actual bottles were very close to http://www.healthyheartmarket.com/images/p...etchup_full.jpghttp://www.senecafoods.com/images/photo_in...scondiments.jpg
jdonn
I'm surprised so many Americans answered this thread. I have eaten a ton of ketchup in my life but I don't believe any of it was imported.
gwnn
hmm jdonn? Americans don't shop in foreign countries?
jdonn
hmm jdonn? Americans don't shop in foreign countries? For ketchup? Actually a funny memory I have was going to Belgium when I was 16 for a week. The family I stayed with had ketchup on hand. On the back of the bottle, in French, it said "From America: Land of liberty and ketchup". Not exactly how I think of America, but I guess in Belgium it may be. Not exactly how I think of America, but I guess in Belgium it may be. I'm guessing "Land of Liberty and secret prisons" or "Land of Liberty and the world's largest thermometer and ball of twine" wouldn't sell stuff. Heck ya, what else are you going to put on the burgers you managed to make in a pan?

JoAnneM
Don't forget we are shopping in a foreign country for this ketchup. Maybe we can't even read the words on the label but the pretty pictures show a hamburger with ketchup on it. So I am going with the label that tells me what I am buying, and is most attractive.
