gnasher
pass pass 4♥ 5♠pass What does partner want? Is this enough: J10763 6 7643 954 Adverse vulnerability, if it matters.
phil_20686
this auction asks for a heart control i think. However i still might pass given that my hand is pretty poor. Might regret this opposite AKQxxxxxxxxAKA or similar, which he is quite likely to have. I suppose if i totally trust my partner i should bid here, but he may well be under pressure with some other type of good hand, maybe AKQxxxxxxAKxx- it might be a bit wet, but i will pass here. fachiru
Yeh, it's enough for me.Prd. did not X (did not want to take a chance on me passing that) and he's instructing me to raise with less than 2 ♥ losers.Slam better be cold on this dummy or else. Fluffy
5♠: I have 11 top tricks. Lacking probably 2 aces, or ♠K (impossible with our holding). So pass.
Trinidad
I am with the crowd that says 5♠ asks for a heart control. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that I know what to bid now. :( Flip....... (I am actually flipping a coin.) I pass. Rik

cherdanno
Wow so far I completely disagree with every single answer.5♠ IS JUST A GENERAL INVITATION TO 6♠!!! You have only one bid available to invite slam with a spade one-suiter. Surely a general invitation comes up more frequently than the "I have 2 heart losers" case, or the "I need and ace" case?I don't think I have quite enough to bid on here. billw55
Surely partner had an ace-asking bid of some sort available. If he was missing two aces, he would have used it. So I don't think that is his problem. True, it could be that he needs a heart control. But looking at my hand, I wonder also if he is concerned about a trump loser. Since I have it covered either way ... 6♠
Simplicity
I'd expect pard to lack a heart control and be inviting slam. However i would think quite common for pard to have another potential slow loser. AKQxxxx xx A AKT looks like a 5♠ bid to me With the sample hand i'm unsure. I think i'd probably kick it in, it could just be cold, have chances or they may even save in 7♥ when LHO has a spade void. Good thread, its made me think
Phil
Surely partner had an ace-asking bid of some sort available. If he was missing two aces, he would have used it. Surely...no. Putting myself at more risk for disdain, I will venture that 5♠ does ask for a heart control. We have 4N....5x....5♠ to show a near slam force. phil_20686
I dont agree that this is the only bid to invite slam. With a general slam invitation you bid 4N and then 5S to show a general slam invite with spades no? Assuming that you would double 4h (or just bid 4s) with any hand that was two suited including spades?

Maybe it has xx in hearts after all.
kenrexford
Actually, I think this is even more complicated. Partner might have at least THREE options: 1. Bid 5♠2. Bid 4NT and then 5♠3. Bid 4NT and then 5♥ I cannot imagine that 5♠ is some sort of grand try for the chosen minor or some sort of slam invite for the minor with no heart control, with a 5NT escape offered, and 5♥ the same thing with a heart control/stopper. That seems too esoteric. So, 4NT...5♥ would seem to be showing spades, as escaping at 5♠ is possible. (4NT...5NT would seem to be a heart-stopper slam invite.) If 4NT...5♥ asks and 4NT...5♠ shows, or vice-versa, then an immediate 5♠ shows something different. Now, I actually think that one of 4NT...5♥ or 4♥-5♥ is a minor-spade slam try. Thus, 4NT...5♠ should probably show a spade-minor slam try (partner picked the wrong major) and 4NT...5♥ the same thing, but partner now picked the RIGHT minor. That means 4♥-5♠ and 4♥-5♥ would each be spade slam tries, one showing and quazntitative, the other denying and quantitative. I would expect the 5♥ call to be asking, such that 5♠ shows, by default. Fluffy
I disagree Ken, I think 4♥-5♥ is an option for spades, but 4NT-5♥ is a grand try for the minor chosen.
