All IMPs - 8 board matches

1. KQJx Qxxxx -- Jxxx

opps are vul

(1) - 2 - (P) - 3;

(4) - 5 - (5) - P;

(P) - x - (P) - ?

2. x AKJxx QT97 xxx

no one vul - you are dealer.

a ) Do you open?

b ) If you open: Hidden:

If you open, LHO overcalls 1 spade and pard bids 2 spades. Now do you go, invite or signoff?

c ) If you pass: Hidden:

LHO opens 1 spades, pass, 1N on right, I assume you overcall 2 hearts. Pard cues 2 spades - bid game? invite or signoff?

1) Pass. If you want to bid 6C now why didn't you do it last time? All that has happened since then is partner expressing the view that you can beat 5D. It seems silly to pull a double, but defend undoubled (implying that you are willing to defend if partner does not think you can beat 5D, but unwilling to defend if partner does think you can beat 5D). I would have bid 6C the round before.

2) Yes I open. I bid 3D over 2S.

I'll answer the 2nd one 1st.

I opened, but bombed this into game, since my singleton spade is sooo nice. If you invite, partner boosts anyway (I think).

I won't say the result, but is it clear to play a NV game with:

[hv=d=s&v=n&n=sajxxxxht8xdkxcqt&s=sxhakjxxdqt9xcxxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

If I pass first time around, I assume partner won't bid 2 with that, but will simply raise, right? He should have like a king more to bid 2 I think.

Well, obviously I opened, and wanted to frame the problem if I passed, then overcalled, and then needed to make a bid game / invite / signoff decision.

I suppose what you are saying is that if you pass and pard bids 2 that this becomes an auto 4 call, which I agree with.

Er? Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I don't think this is a clear 4 bid at all if partner bids 2 and actually has his bid. I already said I'd bid 3, natural and invitational, assuming the auction went P (1) P (1N) 2 (P) 2 (P) ??

I'm saying if the auction went this way, I hate that 2 bid; it needs like a 4th trump or the Q or something else.

Yes, but, game is pretty close even when pard didn't have his bid, so if he invites and we accept, game has to be good, so I guess I disagree that we should make only a game try after 2.

Maybe I'm the one being unclear LOL.

<!-- NORTHSOUTH begin --><table border=1> <tr> <td> <table> <tr> <td>Dealer:</td> <td> South </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Vul:</td> <td> None </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Scoring:</td> <td> IMP </td> </tr> </table> </td> <td> <table border='1'> <tr> <th> <table> <tr> <th class='spades'>♠</th> <td> AJxxxx </td> </tr> <tr> <th class='hearts'>♥</th> <td> T8x </td> </tr> <tr> <th class='diamonds'>♦</th> <td> Kx </td> </tr> <tr> <th class='clubs'>♣</th> <td> QT </td> </tr> </table> </th> </tr> <tr> <th> <table> <tr> <th class='spades'>♠</th> <td> x </td> </tr> <tr> <th class='hearts'>♥</th> <td> AKJxx </td> </tr> <tr> <th class='diamonds'>♦</th> <td> QT9x </td> </tr> <tr> <th class='clubs'>♣</th> <td> xxx </td> </tr> </table> </th> </tr> </table> </td> <td>  </td> </tr> </table><!-- NORTHSOUTH end -->

Given I open 1h on these hands I expected much more for 2s.This is a simple constructive raise for me.

To interject a random observation:

If you routinely open hands like 2), you have to pre-alert in ACBL-sanctioned events. According to the ACBL, you have to meet the rule of twenty - that is, the number of high card points plus the lengths of your two longest suits must equal twenty. If you would routinely open hands that don't meet this rule, you must pre-alert.

I'm not saying I agree with that interpretation - I think opening 1S on AKT98 QJT9 T98 5 is just fine - but them's the rules.

I know of no such rule of 20 rule in ACBL. Rule of 20 is an evaluation tool for two suited light openings, not a law. Nobody can tell me opening 1S on that 7 loser hand with a rebid is prealertable --actually someone could tell me that, but I would ignore it.

Wow. The Rule of 20 is now the law?

I have been opening light (10+ HCP) NV for a long time. I do let my opps know that we open light. I am not sure that I am obligated by any rule to do so.

One thing I am sure about - the "Rule of 20" is not mentioned in any law book or ACBL regulation.
