Phil
Playing in the Irvine Regional this week. Here's a quick one: IMPs, r/w. Pard opens 1♦ in 2nd - 3♥ on your right: ♠AJxxx ♥Qxx ♦Kxx ♣Jx Your call.
Echognome
I would bid 3♠. I can't get to 3NT any easier by doubling and I think double at this level should be game forcing (i.e. I can't bail out in 4♦). It's an overbid with the likely wasted ♥Q. If I double, then I'm obviously happy if partner bids 3♠, but he's not going to do that on, say, a 3=1=5=4 hand. So the only way to find the 5-3 spade fit is to bid my spades now. If partner doesn't have spade support and was going to bid 3NT over my double, he will still bid 3NT over my 3♠ call.
andy_h
Either X or 3NT, and I think I go for the latter. Really dislike 3♠.
gwnn
I think I'd double. I randomly decided to ask Michael Rosenberg on BBO and he said "maybe 3NT".
Jlall
Doubling is a very common error on this type of hand when people can't decide between 3S and 3N.
MFA
3NT. The practical bid.
mcphee
I sure hope bidding 3N will not be horrible. Usually partners are understanding when you have been placed under some pressure. I would like a tad more. Bidding 3S too likely to blow out 3N.
Phil
3N was the winner. Pard held ♠KQ ♥Jx and 9 points in the minors. If they take their hearts you have 9 and if they don't you can establish a slow minor. I doubled :( Double gets you to an unappetizing 4♦ which is -1. Other table bid 3♠ and played in the 5-2. It should be beaten but wasn't. I learned something here.
