2nd suit and strong or a cue bid?

Today we had a bidding which we did not agree on (SAYC):

1 2

4 ?

I thought it was a strong black suited hand ca 19-21 p and my partner ment it as a cue bid with hearts as trump. She argued that with black suits she could have bid 3 which is still forcing (one bid). I suggested that 5 would have been a cue bid.

Somehow I understand her point, but we had only agreed on SAYC and never discussed this situation earlier.

Comments, please.

well for me it would have been more specific than a qbid it would specifically have shown a singleton and 4+ . Oh and welcome to the 21st century :D

One does not need two bids for the same hand. In SAYC as well as any system ever played, 3C is natural and forcing, therefore whatever 4C is, it cannot be natural and as such, is obviously forcing.

SAYC card does not have splinters so it was showing club ace and heart support. Still, most people who claim to play SAYC, use (or even have agreement with partner to use) splinters. That's what I would guess it is without prior discussion unless I am 100% sure that my partner knows what is on SAYC cards [no splinter].
