ELC is fine if the opponents are constrained to keep the bidding low.

It is not so good if they pre-empt.

After (1) X (4) ?

Partner is poorly placed when she doesn't know if you can tolerate clubs.

Maybe I'm an eternal optomist, but when the auction goes 1-X-4, and the opponents usually have a ten-card fit, we seems to have a fit too.

So, if I have three hearts, that means partner has a void in hearts.

If he doesn't have four spades, and wants to venture out into a minor, he must have at least 10 cards in the minors.

So, if partner guesses to bid 5, I'll take a wild leap of faith and assume he has at least three diamonds with me. When he has 3028 or worse, I'll apologize for pulling his club bid.

So, the ELC still seems to work.

Only rarely do I have PD's to play ELC, so assuming no ELC, it is 1 for me, getting the boss suit into the action right away.

I don't hate a Micheals 2 here but really strive to be 55 or at least have 5 for Mike.

I'd never pass this and if somehow not allowed to bid 1 I bid 2

If I don't double, I am basically out of the auction. If I overcall 2D I may very well lose the spade suit which is the master suit. If partner bids 2C I can over-rule with 2D. the only thing that really hurts is a jump to 3C in which case I try to smile unconvincingly.

Agree with that.

However, (1) X (2) 3

is not so pleasant. This time a conversion to 3 may not fair well, opposite 3-2-2-6 or similar.

1. It seems to me that ten hearts are no more likely than 9 on that auction in practice but maybe I am biased there. My opponents always seem to have nine when I bid on to disaster.

2. Having a fit and wanting to be at the five-level are different things. Sure you might have a fit when partner is 3=6 or whatever in diamonds and clubs but she might be more than happy playing in a club suit opposite support but not so entralled about the prospect of playing in diamonds in a 3=5 fit.

You know, every once in a while, a call might result in a disaster. Happens from time to time.

Also, when there are two options, every so often one of those two options could result in a disaster. That also happens from time to time.

But, occasionally the other option also could result in a disaster, from time to time. Like, when the auction goes 1-P-4 and you have an unknown spade fit, as a simple example. Or, 1-1-4(fit jump) and you have a massive diamond fit.

I bet any decision here could have a large number of "but what if" observations.

I have seen a lot of -1100 pushes in my day, too. If anyone had just passed, the score would have been -140, but no! Both idiots did something stupid and went -1100! Or, maybe the bid was right and thus both people got a normal -1100?

I play X for take out :)

X on these hands and partner will be keen to tell you l about that nice 6 card club suit they hold, proabably at the 4 or 5 level - and they'll play it it X'd

1 at pairs and perhaps favourable at teams otherwise pass

While I am not a fan of ELC and if I double I expect my partner to be keen to bid their six-card suit at the four or five level in competition with appropriate values I would hope that if we did play ELC that partner would be just a little more reluctant to take a unilateral action at those levels knowing that I might not have support.

Call me unusual but I vote for 2. Although I have xxx the rest of my hand is worthy enough of a 2/1 overcall (purity of suits). My 2nd choice is 1. The reason why I go for 2 is that we may still be able to get to spades if say lefty raises hearts and partner doubles for takeout.

You have :

[hv=d=e&v=n&s=saq108h762daj1085c7]133|100|[/hv]

RHO opens 1 what do you bid ?

Does the type of scoring affect your decision ?

Your opinion : ELC vs Standard (X + suit = Strong Hand)

1 -- WTP?

I can understand being a little skittish about 1 when red, but at this vul. I won't start having second thoughts unless it goes (1) - 1 - (P) - P - (X) to me...
