Pass or bid?

Recommended Posts

In the context of Lebensohl, 3C showes 4 clubs, at least 8HCP,

so it is a pretty good description.

In the balancing position, it is typical to act with about 3 HCP less and balancer's partner therefore needs 3 HCP more. Accordingly we have 5 HCP. Though it is a pretty good 5 HCP, this is a 2NT bid playing Lebensohl and a 3 bid if not.

You are in 2nd seat, red vs red in a IMP match. The auction goes

(2) - p - (p) - X

(p) - ?

You hold

[hv=d=e&v=b&s=sxxhatxxdatxctxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

Your action and justification?

The obvious choices are pass, 2NT, and 3C. Partner was in the passout seat so could have a wide range of values. Nevertheless he will need to be nearer the top end than the bottom for us to make game which makes 2NT too much of an overbid. Pass is fairly risky as well as partner rates to be nearer the middle and 2H= would not be good so I will bid the conservative 3C.

In that case I pass.

Seriously, I bid because I hate it when declarer plays

KJ8xxx opp Q9 for 1 loser.

I can live with partner's square double.

btw, there is a good case against Lebensohl in 4th seat.

When it goes, 2 - no - no - ?

4th hand with a 17 count including A-Q has a problem. Basically you choose between the underbid of 2NT and the overbid of 3NT.
