World Team Championships Predictor 2009

I would not have picked Bulgaria to be in the top 8, but towards the end of the round robin, I believe they will be in the QF.

This is a late entry, but had I made prediction at the beginning, for BB it would have been

1-2. Netherlands, Norway 3-4. Italy, USA2. 5-8. China, USA 1, Russia, Poland.

Europeans show in BB good performance, all teams in the top8 at the moment.

Well, of the 24 quarter final places across the 3 competitions, (if I've got all the details right) Europe has got 15 of its 18 teams through, the US has got 5 of its 6 teams through, China has got its 2 teams through - and the final slots are Egypt and Indonesia - which I guess really tells you what parts of the world have most of the top talent at the moment.

All the entries can be seen on Google Docs at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/mvfqkp (a google account is not required).

I will update the spreadsheet when we reach the quarter-finals.

The spreadsheet has been updated with the points awarded for reaching the quarter-finals. This highlights the folks who have predicted the quarter-finalists with greatest accuracy, but with a lot more points available for the later rounds most are still in with a chance.

The leaders have correctly predicted 14 of the 16 Open and Women's qualifiers, plus six of the Seniors.

With USA2 due to play Netherlands in the BB Q/F, many of us who chose both to win medals will be wrong. In the BB, at least one of Norway, China, Bulgaria and Germany must win a medal.

In the Women's, I wonder if China will regret picking the dangerous young Sweden team instead of Italy or Spain as Q/F opponents?

In the Seniors, one of England, Egypt, Belgium and Indonesia must reach the Grand Final, with the other half of the draw being four tough teams. Lasut - Manoppo have played every board for Indonesia, which might make tiredness a factor.

If the WBF changed the BB and VC to 24 teams with 8 instead of 6 from Europe, then Denmark and Iceland would have been in the BB field, and Poland and either Netherlands or England (tied 8th in Pau) in the VC. Including an extra team from Zone 6 (Pacific Asia) would probably have just added an extra team to the middle of the field. I mentioned that as follow-up to recent discussions in these forums.

Congratulations to Maggie whose strategy of taking Peter Gill's Venice Cup and Seniors Bowl answers and attempting to beat him on the Bermuda Bowl proved successful. Maggie lives in the US so getting the prize there will be a challenge, but perhaps possible on one of my US trips or one the other way.

Well, I won't say no to a prize, but I can hardly say I deserved it. Thank you for your excellent picks Peter Gill! B) :D

Congratulations to Zia for winning his first Bermuda Bowl! I'm thrilled to see one of my biggest idols win what he deserved for so long. Also congratulations to all the other champions! :)
