olliebol
Ok lets go: Bermuda bowl quarter finals : Germany,U.S.A. 1, Bulgaria and Norway. Semi final : U.S.A. 2 and China. final : Italy and winner the Netherlands. Venice cup quarter finals : U.S.A 1, Sweden, Argentina and Denmark. Semi final : France and Germany. Final : U.S.A. 2 and winner China. Seniors bowl quarter finals australia, Japan, Sweden and the U.S.A. 1. Semi finals England and Indonesia final U.S.A. 2 and winner Poland. Some observations. All U.S.A. teams 2 seem stronger than the first teams. Australia should put the seniors in the open. Once i picked the quarterfinalists from each competition, which was hard to do and sometimes real guesswork, the rest of the prediction flowed naturally. But i was never going to predict the Dutch team losing the final of course. B)
maggieb
I am sure the Dutch players are very fine, but I have never heard of them so I cannot imagine them beating the likes of Zia, Hamman and Meckwell :). My pick for the Bermuda Bowl: 1. USA2 :D2. Italy3. The Netherlands3. Norway5. China5. Russia5. Bulgaria5. USA1 I don't pay much attention to the other events but my husband and I do enjoy a good bottle of wine. So I'm just going to copy Peter Gill's picks and hope to beat him in the open event. B) VC:1. kayin801
I somewhat understand it looking at the competitiors for USA2/Italy/Netherlands, but there seems to be little love for USA 1? They CLEANED UP at the US trials for the most part, is it really that hard to keep the momentum going? Plus Doub-Wildavsky are stone cold killas. Richard09
OK, I know nothing and Scotland is too far to go for a bottle of wine. But on the other hand, entry to the competition seems to cost the right amount. BB:1.Italy2. USA23-4: Netherlands, USA15-8: Germany, Japan , Norway, China VC:1. France2. PeterGill
Maggie, Copying my tips for the VC and Seniors is not likely to be any good, since my markets (I do not take bets) for those events fail to separate the contenders: WOMEN4.50 China, France 5.00 USA1, Germany 5.50 USA2 15 Sweden 50 Italy 100 Indonesia, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Brazil 200 Japan, Argentina, Venezuela 999 Barbados, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan SENIORS 5.00 Poland, USA1 5.50 USA2, Indonesia 12.00 Sweden, Canada 16 England, Japan 50 Australia, Italy, Turkey, India 100 Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, South Africa 200 Belgium, Pakistan 999 Venezuela, Barbados, New Zealand In my BB market (no bets taken), the contenders are much more separated:2.10 Italy 5.50 USA2 6.50 Neth'lds 16 Norway 25 USA1, China 66 Germany, Bulgaria 80 Russia, Argentina 100 Brazil, New Zealand 200 India, Chile, Japan 300 Egypt, Chinese Taipei 500 Australia, Mexico, Guadeloupe, Morocco, Pakistan A FORM GUIDE Some form from USA's Spingold which was held recently, after their Playoffs is:- Both teams in the Grand Final of the Spingold included several players who lost to the Morse - Wolff USA1 Seniors in the USA Seniors Playoff.- USA1 Open (BB) was seeded 20th in the Spingold and performed accordingly. Other form:China Women has dropped their long-standing top pair and selected their 2nd, 3rd and 4th pairs from the past. They are having a lot of training with the sole focus being to win in Brazil. 2009 PABF Championships: China won the Open easily for the 4th year in a row. With bridge being a Mind Sport, teams who do not have to travel far often perform well. Brazil Open has a strong line-up on paper but not the greatest local form, I think. Argentina is much stronger on paper than in 2007. Chile tied with Brazil for 1st in last year's South American Championships which I played in. Brazil Women seems to lack some of their top players such as Mandelot and Nogueira. Any of those teams could do well. New Zealand has a stronger team than usual in BB. Sweden has a good young team in the Women's. Just like people who don't watch any regular season NCAA Basketball occasionally submit bracket sheets in the office pool.

Rain
With bridge being a Mind Sport, teams who do not have to travel far often perform well. Brazil Open has a strong line-up on paper but not the greatest local form, I think the home field advantage is much decreased in mind sports actually. Personal opinion! Mind sport - can always combat by going 1-2 days earlier to be well rested for event. But physical sports, even indoor sports, the new humidity, new climate, the partison crowds all become stressful factors that affect performance much more. Hmm, yes - but just because the US teams cannot meet in the finals, doesn't mean to say that the pick will necessarily score badly.
