1 (2) ? to you. The agreement you have here is that X promises at least one 4-card major.

Is this enough to X? What will you do if pard responds 2?

I play the Neg-DBL here "guarantees Sp and says nada about Hts".

So I PASS with this hand.

If it gets passed around to partner, part of the Neg-DBL convention is for him to make every effort to re-open with a DBL, to protect against me holding a Club stack.

He also knows I may have Hts but not Sp.

And barring that, I could also return to a relatively safe 2D.

pass and let partner make a reopening double. a -X ought to show at a minimum either 34 or 43 in the majors to avoid the temptation to make a -X with this hand altho I would rather stick my hand on a hot frying pan.

LOL I only said I was tempted, I still hate passing.

This is not remotely close.

If 2C gets passed out, that's great! Partner has club length (else he'd reopen), and you have club length, so defending is just fine.

If partner does not have club length, he will reopen with something. Great! We will get to the right strain. There is a small risk that we will not get high enough (if partner Xs, and we bid 2H, and partner has a max to pass that), but partner will still play us for some values in that auction (similar to how he plays you for a little something when the opps have preempted), and will often bid again with significant extras.

So the downside of passing is being too low sometimes. But think about the downside of bidding. If partner bids 2S we must go back to 3D, and could easily be in a ridiculous contract on a misfit hand. And what about if partner bids 3S? Oh brother... Even worse, what if LHO raises clubs and partner bids 3S. Even worse.

It is ok to be passing with 8 points and length in their suit! Embrace it!

If you have only one major, then you have to be at least 11 or 12 HCP in case he bids the wrong major. If you are weaker, you have to have both, so that you don't mind which he bids, you can pass.

You pass because you don't have 4-4 and you are not more than 11 HCP. You have long clubs, so partner is going to make a takeout double, after wich you can bid 2.

If you had shorter clubs and longer diamonds, you could bid 2.
