You play some kind of standard american, not 2/1:

1-(2)-2-(3)

Pass-(Pass)-3-(Pass)

??

2=forcing

3=non-forcing

Do you agree with opening this hand 1 and passing the 2nd round. Do you pass 3 or bid 3 to show your 's.

I would open this hand.

There was no discussion, what would a double of 3 by partner have been in this method?

I am not ashamed of opening, nor am I afraid of bidding now because I have "overbid". I have a reasonable opening hand and game is still possible. Thus, I would certainly willing to bid 3 now IF this was IMPS, I would do so. This is matchpoints, however, so I will pass and hope that a plus score is good enough rather than bidding 3 to get at a possible, but on the minimum 3 rebid unlikley game.

If partner cannot back in with a double, I see no reason to do anything but pass the non-forcing 3D bid.

The disparity between the suits adds another reason to open the bidding in my best suit rather than pass and try to show a 2-suiter later.

I agree with the pass of 3C.

I think I like 1 and 3. I just can't see how defending 3 will be a good pairs score. I have a singleton, I will rather play in a dubious game than defend 3.

I agree with Ben though that at pairs pass is more desirable than IMPs.

If you passed 3, pass is clear now.

"Do you agree with opening this hand 1♠ ...? "

Rule-of 20 advocates would say yes and

ZAR pointers would say yes:

Briefly ZAR points is:

i) HCPs (usual 4321) plus

ii) honor HCP (2 for each A and 1 for each K) plus

iii) "shape" points (length of 2 longest suits+ (length of longest suit - length of shortest suit))

(that is it takes into account both extra points for A and K and shape)

If 26 or more then open.

♠ AKQ43

♥ JT873

♦ 76

♣ 8

HCP = 10

honor HCP = 3

shape points = 5 + 5 + 5 - 1 = 14

_____

ZAR points = 27

Just enough

One of the easiest openings ever. You have 5-5 majors, all values in both suits and it's NV. I would have bid 3 over 3 to bid out my shape - my philosophy is to not be so pedantic about showing full blown values in competitive auctions. Shape is key, especially when it's 5-5 majors. As the fallback, at least we have xx if partner insists on more diamonds.

I open 1 and I bid 3 over 3. I guess I misclicked when I passed, so now I pass again. At least I am sure we have a fit. My partner wouldn't rebid a 5 cards suit, and at level 3 it should be solid too, yet 5 would be quite a stretch even for me. :)

1-(2)-2-(3)

Pass-(Pass)-3-All Passs

3 would have been better then 3 (but I think you can only stop in 3 if you first pass over 3)

The reality is that I am not going to cater my methods to stopping in a part-score when I open the bidding and partner makes a strength showing 2/1.

After opening 1 (which is not automatic but is not objectionable), it is clear to pass over 3 and again over 3.

If I bid 3 now, I doubt that I will be able to play it there.

By the way, it is far from clear that 3 is going down. The opps are going to have to untangle the heart suit before they give up the lead (although there are some problems for declarer after a club lead and a trump shift).

I don't have any problem with partner's 2 bid. A two level bid in competition is not the same as a 2 over 1.

I would bid 2 over 2. I think getting your (decent) suit involved in competitive auctions are crucial. But of course I plan on rebidding 3 if I get the chance next which would be NF for me. And no, I don't intend the 2 as a NFB.

By the way, 3H will never make against reasonable defenders.

Lose 4H and a C

or 3H 1S and a C.

Andy, your comment means that I guess you would bid 3D on AK to 6 and out? The C hons are waste paper of course. Gutsy bid to force on that tripe.
