Matchpoints, all vuln. 15-board BBO match. P is quite smart. Opps unknown. RHO opens 3 in third seat. You dbl, rho redoubles, partner passes. Maybe you should now pass without looking at your hand acknowledging partner's penalty pass, but let's say you were not sure if p's pass was for penalties.

p--p-3-x

xx-p-p--3

p-3

My preference in these auctions is that the XX is forcing on P unless they want to play 3xx. This prevents you from saving the opps when partner holds Axx Kxx xx QJT98 and was going to make a penalty pass. Of course this means your LHO psyched a XX

penalty pass of course, you run from it well you should have a weak take out double based on club void.

Partner makes another move, your strenght (10-12) and shape (4360 or alike) are very determined now, this is a good point for 3 being just a correction.

But 3 is such a small target that after 3 is not doubled simplest is pass-> weak, rest GF.

I voted for weakish, but it could as well be weak. It is certainly non-forcing to me. With 4:4 in the majors, partner could have bid 4 instead of passing a second time. Five spades with game aspirations would have come earlier. I assume partner doesn't have hearts, and being MP is just trying to improve the score.

If this was IMP's it would seem like a small target, so I'd be more inclined to treat it as forcing.

Pass over the redouble converts.

I posted a similar auction a year or two ago (that I messed up) except the opening was 4.

So partner is bidding 3 through clenched teeth, but 3 is NF.

Bidding now whilst taking partner's pass as a confusion is a bit hard. I'd definitely play partner's pass as penalties - otherwise, imagine LHO (a passed hand) being able to XX knowing we can pass for penalties.

Nevertheless partner's 3 is NF. Anything resembling a 2-suiter GF or something partner can bid 4.
