Jlall
Qx 98xxx QJxx AT red/white matchpoints. 1D from pard, 2H on your right, p p X p ? 1D is 2+ diamonds 11-15. If he has 2 diamonds hes always balanced or 4225, and can have 5 clubs or 4 spades at most. If he's balanced he's 11-13. If he's unbalanced he can be 4135, else he has 4+ diamonds. You know that your partner loves to reopen with Xs, and often make penalty passes with him that you wouldn't make with others because of this propensity. You inquire about their 2H style, they say "We never play together, but he's white/red" and look at you like you're a moron.
xcurt
I guess you have to pass since if you bid your matchpoint equity is poor compared with pairs that opened 1D standard and got the 2H overcall. I'm not particularly sanguine about our chances of +300 here however.

Gerben42
3♦, if partner can Dbl he can't be that short in ♦. Passing without a trump trick seems... suboptimal, even though you have 5 of them.
helene_t
Would p really reopen with 4225? OK I suppose he would with 4135 which is no fun either. Anyway, 3♦.
dake50
I hope partner quits with 11-13. So we have 9+14, I try 2N.
Winstonm
So far all we know is that partner has at least 2 diamonds while the opponents have an unnerving and uncanny ability to determine intelligence. I am going to trust my opponents, pass, and lead a trump.
shyams
Pass If jlall is one of the defenders, the defence is up one trick already
kfay
I wouldn't pass this one. I might've bid 3♦ over 2♥ initially, tbh. Now bidding 3 might not be enough. Anyway if partner balances light I guess I'm not going to hang him. 3 wimpy diamonds.

gwnn
So what happened?
benlessard
3D WTP. Partner is favorite to have 5 diamonds. He could have only 3 with 4135 shapes but they could easily make 2H and even 2H X-1 might be worth no MP.
shevek
So far all we know is that partner has at least 2 diamonds while the opponents have an unnerving and uncanny ability to determine intelligence. I am going to trust my opponents, pass, and lead a trump. Dude. Why would you lead trump? You totally want to tap declarer.I bid 3♦ because the defence is unclear. However, leading diamonds against 2♥x will allow declarer to elope with small trumps. If South's trumps are solid (♥98765) it's better to lead one, or ♠Q. This is a possible layout: [hv=d=n&v=n&n=skjt7hjdat98ckj87&w=sa932h2dk432c5432&e=s865hakqt43d6cq96&s=sq4h98765dqj75cat]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] Now diamond leads earn +100 when declarer scores all 6 trumps, while a spade or heart is +300. Pretty specific, I'll admit.
Apollo81
3♦ and hope to come out of it unscathed, I'd pass if my hearts were T87xx
mikegill
I also don't see how you can pass even though it could be right. If partner has 2 hearts to an honor he really shouldn't even be balancing, and if he doesn't they probably have 5+ heart tricks to go with their side cards. I'll join the 3♦ chorus.
