pooltuna
[hv=d=e&v=n&s=sxhxxxdqxxxcqxxxx]133|100|Scoring: MP(2♠) - P - (4♠) - Dbl;(P) - ?[/hv] Problem courtesy of Ch00. What say you? This is why you pass with AJxxx x Axx AJxx in 4th seat when the auction is P P 4♥ to you. 4♥ rates to go down but you can't make anything so you end up taking a pointless sacrifice, going down doubled. With this hand, Pass and expect partner to set it with the pitiful help you have.
gwnn
pooltuna when everyone doubled AJxxx x Axx AJxx, it lead to a making 4♠. what's your point? maybe you could express it a little better so i understand it
Fluffy
Partner is short in spades, we have a double fit surelly. What partner should pass is a balanced 18 count with 2/3 spades, not a hand with shortness in their suit suitable to play or defend.

In the hand that got to a making 4♠ how would you like to bid into 4♥XX or have partner hold a similar hand to the one here that is asking what call to make after the X
nigel_k
4NT is probably best at matchpoints because -590 (or -690) is quite likely and we can't afford that. At IMPs I would pass. It doesn't look like the sort of hand where both sides make game. In many cases the alternative to -590 will be -500. If partner has enough to make five of a minor we should collect 300 or 500. So those will be smallish losses. We'll gain when both contracts fail (obviously) or when we make five of a minor but partner continues to slam. Those gains will be slightly less frequent but bigger overall. Passing bad hands like this also implies that I have some values when I do bid 4NT so it'll be easier for partner to bid slams.
