G_R__E_G
The Bridge World recognizes both: Bridge World Glossary I think "treble" is more of a British thing. Whenever you see darts from the UK on TV they always say "treble twenty" but here in North America it's always "triple twenty".

nigel_k
Where I come from, 'treble' means either to multiply by three or a particular kind of bet you can place at the race track. 'Triple' can mean to multiply by three or can be a collection of three similar things. 'Double' is analagous to 'treble', i.e. to multiply by two or a race bet. 'Pair' has the second meaning of 'triple' but not the first. In Bridge, of course, we do use doubleton instead of pair to mean two. This was originally incorrect but has become accepted through regular usage. If you want to replace 'double' with a term that means the same but refers to three things, the correct one is probably treble. If you are looking for the most accurate term to describe a collection of three objects and don't mind whether it is consistent with 'double', I would suggest triple is better. Cascade
trebleton seems more consistent with singleton and doubleton to me. But the sources that I looked at suggest that tripleton was more official.

1eyedjack
"3 vomit" By the way, if "trebleton" is the correct extension of "doubleton", what would be the proper name for "xx" in a universe where "xxx" is properly described as "tripleton". gordontd
So we're discussing how best to shorten the two syllables of "three small"? Perhaps we should also consider shortening "world wide web" to "doubleyou doubleyou doubleyou". :P

mycroft
There are, I am sure, several webservers with a third-level-domain name of "6U" or "sixu". Of course, if they're massive rackmounts, or triply-load-balanced servers, 6U might fit for other reasons. "dub dub dub" gets "trance trance trance" in reply, if you're talking to me on the phone.
