I voted for x-4s but South should double only if it is take-out oriented. North should then bid 4 and I think 10 tricks will be fairly easy.

I could understand South not doubling (3 aces and 2 Jacks?) but I would hardly inderstand North passing the double. 4 by South is an individual/bad bridge decision in my opinion.

west deals and east opens 4. nobody vulnerable imps.

I think that I would product the followig auction

Mark me down in double, followed by 4 contingent

Too much strength in partners suit for me to want to pass

I PASS.

Looking at the two hands we seem to have a suitable dummy for a 4 bid but it is not completely clear we will win 10 tricks.

I vote with Wayne. Yeah you can make 4 and it is an easy decision to say you would X and bid 4 seeing partner's hand. You could also be walking into a double. All you really should know is that partner is a passed hand. So I blame the OP 100% for a bad poll :P

Ever heard about "4H is a transfer to 4S"?

Sry, we have 14HCP - mainly prime values, and a suitable shortage,

why on earth should I pass?

The only reason I can think of, that makes pass a distant possible

option is, that you happen to play a style, who basically always opens

flat 11 counts, e.g. if you play a 10-12 NT opening bid.

But even than this just may mean, that they can make 4H, and 4S is

a cheap sacrifice.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Dbl with South and 4 with North and yes, it's a wtp. If you don't ever act with South's hand you are just giving up to a preempt. AJAAJ and a shortage, I can't fathom a pass. North's three little hearts with values point towards bidding and our most likely game is in spades.

I don't believe you, Wayne.

I am very conservative when partner is a passed hand.

Definitely with the majority on this one, balancing x with the south hand and a wtp 4 by north.

You can't call this a balancing DBL?

No, it seems like a balancing double is defined by americans to apply at low levels only. Then again, if I define this position as low level.....

You can't call this a balancing double because of position not level. Balancing doubles mean you have the option to end the auction but don't.

Ahh, that's what happens when one doesn't read the OP just before making replies. I thought the auction was 4 P P right till this moment. Sorry guys!

Perhaps the aces mitigate towards bidding.
