jillybean
(P) 2♣ (2♥) 3♣(3♥) 3♠ (P) 4♣(P) 5N? Grand slam force in ♣'s or asking partner to bid 7♣ with ♥ control? or something else?
Cascade
Something else. Pick-a-slam. I should have a heart stop for this so that 6NT is an option without great clubs and without any spade tolerance.
TylerE
I feel rather cold to the notion that 6NT is a good option when we've established that we don't have much of a fit anywhere, but I do agree it's more of a general pick-a-slam type bid. General rule of thumb: When keycard is available, other bids can't asks for controls or trump honors.

Fair enough Phil. That sounds reasonable to me.
jillybean
Ok, so how could opener check for ♥ control here? Other than jump to 6 and hope partner bids 7 with extras. (P) 2♣ (2♥) 3♣(3♥) 3♠ (P) 4♣(P) ?
Cascade
Ok, so how could opener check for ♥ control here? Other than jump to 6 and hope partner bids 7 with extras. (P) 2♣ (2♥) 3♣(3♥) 3♠ (P) 4♣(P) ? Good question. I don't think there is enough room. I think 4♦ is natural. And therefore the only very good club raise is 4♥ (excluding jumps). And that should promise a heart control. Given we have a strong 2♣ and a positive (I presume), 5♣ probably suggests raising with heart control. And by a similar extension 6♣ maybe suggests seven if partner has first round heart control. With heart control ourselves we would bid 4♥. P_Marlowe
Ok, so how could opener check for ♥ control here? Other than jump to 6 and hope partner bids 7 with extras. (P) 2♣ (2♥) 3♣(3♥) 3♠ (P) 4♣(P) ? 4D, a cue for clubs. 4C did set the suit. Of course this assumes, that you dont open 2C with 2-suiters,and there is no other reason than that to treat 4D as natural. With kind regardsMarlowe PS: If I jump to 6C, I expect partner to pass.If he bids 7C over 6C, he better is right, and a lucky make ofa 50% grand slam is nothing I want to discuss. Phil
With apologies for veering away from suitable B/I material: Over 4♣: 4♦ is natural. 4♥ should be a strong raise to 5♣, but I'd also say 9/10 times opener will have a heart control, but it doesn't promise one. AKQJx, xx, AKQx, AJ 5♣ meh. Probably denies a heart control.
Free
For me 5NT is "pick a slam", although I'm not convinced this is "correct".
skjaeran
Over 4♣, 4♦ is natural, 4♥ is a strong raise not 100% promising a control, 5NT is pick a slam.
neilkaz
Over 4♣, 4♦ is natural, 4♥ is a strong raise not 100% promising a control, 5NT is pick a slam. I play it as you do. 5NT isn't really needed as GSF when 4NT RKCB is available.
