Mail Messages

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been away for the past month or so, and just logged on. I was confronted by countless mail messages from clubs I belong to, mostly advertising tournaments that occurred a long time ago. So I was frantically clicking through them in order to be able to actually use BBO when I accidentally deleted a message from Uday, and it was gone, vanished, with no way to retrieve it (even for a yellow).

Therefore, I suggest the following

i) Clubs should have the possibility to "date" their messages. Maybe their should be an option along the lines of "advertise tournament", whereby the user is automatically informed of how long it will be before the tourney starts, but if it has already started he should not receive the mail.

ii) Mail messages that are received should appear in the chat box after "OK" has been clicked.

Clicking OK saves the notices I receive to my hard drive for review later - just as well - every day there are dozens and if I am in a hurry even just clicking OK seems to take for ever !.

What I would really like though would be for the newest messages to be ON TOP .

1. Application from a prospective member - no details so I fill in the reply box telling them what they need to do (yes ! I do copy/paste - wouldn't have any fingers left if I didn't) and then click Ok and up pops another message from the same person details supplied - so now I have to send another message to say disregard my last message :-(( Once one sighs , 3 times one grits ones teeth, 6 times in a row and .....

2. When a member has been away for a time they will get the relevant ones first then can ignore the outdated ones . Have not tested it lately but there used to be a limit to the number of mail messages that were kept for an absent member - so having the new ones on the bottom meant they were the ones that remained undelivered.

Interestingly some messages go off on a wee tour of cyber space - one I sent took 80 days (I's telling the truth !!) to reach the mailbox of the intended :-)) BUT it DID get there !!

I love the idea of "tournment announcement" that expire. Unlike club managers, whio get messages about wanting to joing their club, I primarily get announcement about tournments. They usually run like this...

----------------

XXXX club tourney in 2 h ours

XXXX club tourney in 1 hour

Only 45 minutes left to sign up for XXXX club touney

15 minutes until until XXXX club tourney, find your favorite partner and sign up now

-----------------

And all four of those will have been sent and the tourney started, often over, before I log on and even read the first one of them. There is an option to send to club members logged on chat messages rather than this kind of mail. I guess this mail would be ok, if it expired when tourneys start. I am condidering resigning from a number of clubs simply because such messages are as bad as spam. First thinig I do when I log on, if I have time to play, is look for upcoming tourneys, so these messages are redundant for me anyway.

Club managers running tourneys should use more club chat, and less club mail if you ask me.

Each day, we erase all mail messages that are over 2 weeks old. For certain chatty clubs, we erase messages that are over 3 days old.

Contact the club manager if you don't like receiving tourney reminders via bbo-mail.

The BBO mail facility is not ICQ, not even close. I can see a need for what the clubs are doing - reminding users that they are scheduled to play, announcing the tourney start time. perhaps we need a better way of doing that.
