dull partscore decision

Don't you play double to show this hand? I thought you did. :)

Without this tool, I would try 1 NT, to show shape, stoppers and point count.

Well maybe I would even with a double avaiable.

I would probably double.

1NT and double seem to be the options. Double (4th suit + tolerance for partner's suit, or takeout, whatever our agreement is), but 7/9 of our HCP are in the opposition suits. Or 1NT, good club stoppers, OTOH just Ax in the suit where the opponents probably have at least an eight card fit, and some danger of going for a number when partner is minimum and we have no fit.

I don't like pass so much, we have reasonable values, QT in partner's suit, and a chance to show something now while the auction is low.

I would bid 1NT. As much as I love snapdragon doubles, I don't know why I want to show such a poor suit.

Agree. Why would I want to suggest playing in this crappy suit? 2 is a 2nd choice.

I like double since if partner doesn't want to choose either suit, he will have enough length in the other suits to chance 1NT himself. It's not like he will play in diamonds with a doubleton. I think showing the heart tolerance is important in case he has an indifferent six card suit.

Double strikes me as very bad... we can expect a spade raise many times, and we don't want partner bidding diamonds very often, unless he has 4 of them, and that seems anti-percentage even if the opps raise spades. And we sure as heck don't want partner, later in the defence, to think we have a diamond card higher than the 9.

I would chance 1N, and unless partner was a devotee of 4 card overcalls, I would make an exception to my almost-universal rule and consider 2 as my second choice.

As is often the case, Mike and I agree 100%.

I would add that 2 is even more appealing if X would have been showing support with Ace or King (rather than snap), such that 2 will be taken as NOT that good for a lead. Or, alternatively, double as an option if not snap but rather a non-AK raise. I still like 1NT better.

Another data point for you (not that this proves anything).

This comes from a regional in chicagoland last weekend.

Our bidding (I was South)

(1)-1-(1)-1NT

(Pass)-Pass-(2) all pass

2 - 1 was worth 0 matchpoints. (We didn't find the diamond ruffs)

A double would have worked much better than 1NT here.

My dear Czaba,

when it is normal for you to overcall with no suit and no points, your partner should never bid 1 NT wit less then 11 HCPs and good stoppers. THis is no rocket science.

If the colors were red-on-red, as was the case in the post, and if the defense was less than hopeless, you would score and easy +200, which I bet scores better.

Dbl would probably have got you to 1NTx also.

Without looking at the hand diagram I would double. I like 1NT to show a little more.

Maybe pass has merits, at all vul and IMPs? P needs quite a lot for us to make game. If he has that, he may dbl whatever my LHO bids if I pass.

I would be concerned that I wouldn't be able to cooperate in constructive bidding if I don't show my hand now, though.

1- i wouldnt overcall.

2- i think 1Nt is a clear mistake. Not strong enough and the hand could easily play better elsewhere.

3- I would put you down -3 for -800 (all you have to do is give count in clubs so that north can hold up in clubs)

After taking three spades, three diamonds and two clubs, one of the defenders is on lead. Which suit would you like them to play?
